So that's how it is, hm? Things seem to be back to normal now; it still seems a little weird to get used to.

[But all in all, what an interesting month to arrive in Mayfield... or couple of weeks, really. Anyway, on to her next question:]

Is it normal for the town to give back one thing, but not the other?

It's ahright-one helluva wakeup call though, you know? That Mayfield can torment you even when it gives you somethin' back.

As for'a incidents, well-hang on.

[A few seconds pass. Over his end of the line, it sounds like Balin's sifting through some papers.]

Ahright, I got some intel on a few thinga'at happened before I arrived back in July. An'en'ere's stuff I saw for myself.

Back in May'a town sent out a census. Asked a whole lot of bogus questions. You know how'is town's like a batshit-insane parody of America from'a Fifties? Or-maybe you don't if you're not from Earth, but anyway-it kept asking people if they were Communist, an' asked 'em what they feared most, an' what meant'a most to 'em. Anybody fillin' it out was compelled to be truthful, an' after they finished writin' the census was indestructible. Dunno how people found'at out, but'at's what I was told.

Shortly after'at, Mayfield took away everything it gave back to people. Like startin' over from day one-but it sent out letters to certain people, tellin' 'em'ey qualified for a "spring cleaning" program. An'it gave 'em a target to kill. Someone else in'a town. If you did, you'd get back one of your things. If you didn't, then'a town would start makin' you hallucinate based on'a fears an' desires you admitted to havin' in'a census, until you killed your target.

Oh, an' people stayed dead durin'is. Nobody got revived until it was over an' things were turned back'a way'ey were. But'ere's a "trophy room" at'a roller rink with'a names of everyone who killed somebody an' how many people'ey killed.
