Whether you love ’em or hate ’em, secondary characters are an important part of any story. The Hunger Games certainly wouldn’t have been the same without Haymitch, Prim, Cinna, Effie, the other tributes, and even President Snow and the Gamemakers. Their relationships with Katniss and their driving roles in the plot serve to enrich the story and to make the Panem universe feel all the more real and complete.
And now, after that brief introduction, I’d like to propose a bit of a shakeup in format this week. Rather than have you read and respond to an essay on my interpretation of and feelings toward these characters, I thought we could skip right to your thoughts on them. Talk about one in particular, or let us know what you think about multiple characters. What about these characters do you like or dislike? What do they bring to the story? How would The Hunger Games have been different without them and/or the roles they played? If they were to appear in the next book (which is less than a month away now, yay!), what would you like to see for them? Do you see similarities to any of BSG’s secondary characters?
Last week in the comments, Haymitch and Rue, especially, became the subject of some interesting discussion. I’d love to see that continue. What do you make of the idea, for instance, that there are parallels between Kat’s relationship with Haymitch, and Starbuck’s with Colonel Tigh in BSG?
Another particular topic I’m not-so-secretly hoping to chat about this week (hee): Cinna! He just might be my favorite secondary character right now. There’s something about him I really like...perhaps just the way he is with Kat. She seems to feel at ease with him right away. What about you all? What do you think of him? And do you have a favorite secondary character? If so, who is it and why?
Also, just a reminder: Don’t hesitate to thread-hop!
taragel and I may guide the discussions, but this is a forum for all HG fans to have fun and explore the story as a group.
Good hunting!
