Ok.. I've really liked the rock band Queen for many years. My brother bought their (multiple) greatest hits CD's back when CD's were still battling the war versus cassette tapes.. (lol.. yea that long ago) and I listened to them all the time. So, after years of being Queen-less when living on my own I bought a CD of some of their greatest hits. Its definitely missing some of my favorites, but it has one I absolutely like.. and thats Bicycle Race. Well.. I've been rocking out to the CD over the past week or so.. and I finally paid close attention to the lyrics of said song sometime mid last week..... well I noticed the following lines...
You say black, I say white
You say bark, I say bite
You say shark, I say hey man
Jaws was never my scene
And I don't like star wars
You say rolls, I say royce
You say God, give me a choice
You say Lord, I say christ I don't believe in peter pan Frankenstein or superman
I couldn't help but laugh when i heard that really... I mean.. I'm not atheist.. but it sure sounds like Freddy Mercury was.. but maybe I'm just trying to find my own meaning in something that was just a rhyming scheme.. lol
Anyway.. So yea obviously the title of my entry is eluding to that I'm thinking about writing on religion. Its such a controversial topic really. No matter what you say someone gets offended.... its sad. Well, here goes.
Religious Fanaticism is a plague in our society in my opinion.. and that ranges through all belief structures. Even the lack of one. A zealot of any spectrum should be treated with scepticism at all times and should never be your voice. I see so many people who just jump on a band wagon because it is backed by the self righteous, fanatical, outspoken and misguiding people of their religious outlook. I mean really.... Why, tell me exactly WHY, is it wrong to eat meat on a Friday? Where is the basis? Why is it wrong to have an abortion? What makes it right to REMOVE the ability of a person to CHOOSE for themselves their own path? What makes it wrong to be gay? Because someone wrote something on a piece of parchment and claimed divine inspiration? Now, if you can flat out tell me exactly why you believe it.. I can give it to you. Sometimes I'll even except the explanation of because its in the bible and thats what i believe. But you better be ready to back up your belief in the bible and not just tell me its because its what you were raised believing. I want to hear that you have really thought that although gave us FREE WILL and the RIGHT to CHOOSE our path, you know better and you KNOW god doesnt want women to abort something growing inside them. Or that you KNOW god thinks its a sin to eat meat on friday during lent and you are not a sinner.. but doesnt anyone absolutely KNOW what god is thinking? Absolutely not. (By the way.. find me something about eating meat on fridays being wrong.. i havent been able to) Dogma is not an arguement in my opinion. It's just not.
I try to be introspective, reflective, questioning, investigative (etc. etc.) at all times. Really, I do. However, I'll flat out admit that I may be closed minded towards the religious. Which by the way.. being closed minded is exactly what I'm talking about. (its really one of the greatest self inflicted atrocities in my opinion) I personally don't think I am, because I can back up my arguements against religion with personal observations, fact and sometimes even conflicting evidence to what the others are argueing. But I know others see me as close minded and I try to fight against being that everyday. Something I can't argue for them.
