Favorite song meme lifted from ehintz. If I put "none" next to a band, I must seriously loathe that so-called artist to the point where I couldn't even come up with one song I tolerate. If I put "N/A", it means I don't care about the artist enough to learn any songs ( Read more... )

Favorite Genesis song: none
Favorite Pink Floyd song: “Fat Old Sun”

The Pink Floyd song is an odd choice, especially if you don't like Genesis at all. I would think that a Fat Old Sun fan would also like Gabrial-era Genesis. You've heard Selling England From The Pound, right?

I suspect that you must be talking about the 14:23 minute version that they played on the BBC instead of the 5:22 minuate version on Atom Heart Mother. The last 9 minutes is the good part!

I don't know any Gabriel-era Genesis. I guess that means I should have put an "N/A" instead of "none" on that line.

As for "Fat Old Sun", it's been a long time since I heard the BBC version. When it comes to bands like PF, it's so difficult to choose one song that is my definite favorite - so I pick one that is my favorite of the moment. And when you have a wife who doesn't like PF (flames to jessica_420), sometimes you don't get a chance to listen to your favorite albums as often as you would like.

"don't know any Gabriel-era Genesis"

OMFG, I need to send you about 20 boxed bootleg Genesis CD's so you can figure out which 200-minute improg should be your favorite nominee.

So right about U2, decades of success and billions of dollars has not helped them write one freaking memorable tune. It all sounds like "with or without you" in different tempos.

What is with you and this UK-phobia? No results for the Cure, Depeche Mode, New order? Don't tell me now that in the 80's you only listened to Patti Smith and Dylan? LOL

My phobia is with 80s music in general. I also hated Duran Duran and A Flock of Seagulls from the other side of the pond and Tiffany and Loverboy on this side.

But I am into English ska so it's not a 100% "Down with the Eighties" thing. As for the UK, you've seen my collection - a LOT of UK stuff in it.

IMHO the 80's saw some excellent UK artists at their peak: Joy Division, XTC, Kate Bush, Happy Mondays, the Clash, the Police, Gabriel, Bauhaus

I think the "alternative" genre would not exist today if it wasn't for some of them.

in the US 80's also, artists like: Prince, Redhot Chili Peppers, Phish

probably a lot more I forgot... point is eighties weren't so bad if you could filter out the nonsense, and then you have nonsense in all the decades so I can't say the 80's are worst, except for maybe the bad hair. But in general I'd say the 80's was when I was most excited about new music, more due to my circumstance and age at that time than to the actual music, I suspect.

In every decade, the signal to noise ratio is pretty low. That goes without saying. And it's not just music, but all art, and all other products of humanity as well.

I agree with you about some of those 80s bands but not all, though I don't really think of The Clash as 80s but 70s. Yeah, they existed in the 80s, but so did Springsteen, and Pink Floyd, and others. There are other good 80s bands too, like Timbuk3, Uncle Tupelo, Stevie Ray Vaughan, practically the entire American punk scene, etc.

This is my point: put up all the good music from each decade, and you'll observe that of the last four complete decades (60s, 70s, 80s & 90s), the 80s were by far the worst.
