Minuteman Project

Apr 07, 2005 08:21

For those not in the loop, the Minuteman Project is a militia of private citizens who are taking posts along the Mexican border in Cochise County to watch out for illegal border crossers and then call the Border Patrol. So far they've had great success with no allegations of abuse.

Until today. More on that in a moment.

Of course, I'm not a big fan of American immigration policy. I'm all for letting peaceful people travel freely so long as they don't have smallpox and they don't go on the dole. But in the meantime, people who live in border towns are constantly in danger for their lives because of smugglers. The Mexican Army has even been bribed to escort smugglers across the border (not merely to the border, but the Mexican Army crosses the border too).

First and foremost, I care about property rights of the individual. Yeah sure, a guy who lives spitting distance from the border should have an expectation of the occasional hassle. But he also should be allowed to protect himself and his property. And if the government won't do its job in protecting private property, then there is nothing wrong with private citizens banding together for this purpose.

The left is clamoring that this is about racism. There is no evidence of this, no matter how hard they try to insinuate.

Today's papers ran a story of the first "abuse" of an illegal entrant by Minutemen. This is absolutely priceless; I'll let the story speak for itself. It definitely proves how bankrupt - not just morally, but politically - the Left is in this country.
