If those same people had been drowned making a refugee crossing by boat we'd hardly know about it.

Sad truth, in both cases. I follow these things out of technical interest/concern but I can't stomach the mainstream news; there are aviation geek channels where you can observe actual industry folks piecing together what actually happened, minus the political and the conspiracy theories.

That's true in a number of countries. Even the gulf carriers success is widely attributed to government subsidies. In some places the state airline is a division of the post office.
