You know there's many things in this world I do not understand. I'm a reclusive mountain hermit, I don't really get the world at the best of times. But see the media's weird sick fetishistic fascination with air crashes? And the way they pore over every detail, and rush to bring people images of the wreckage ( Read more... )

Because the print media (and its televisual offshoot) is a sick, sick thing my friend.

Newspapers originate in the 17th century- I've studied them deeply and they were already lying and making it up during the Thirty Years' War and our civil wars.

You might find a google on 'Marchamont Nedham' very enlightening!

Are there really that many people in the world who get a sick voyeuristic thrill out of seeing this shit though?

I suppose that's a stupid question isn't it. If there weren't, then the media wouldn't do this.

This was the flight they were first saying was missing and they had no idea where it was, right?

The Egyptair flight that came down in the Mediterranean two days ago, so probably? I think it's the only recent air crash.

Poor old Egypt, they can't catch a break. The tourist trade must be in free-fall.

It is. Prices are down 50% over what I saw in 2001, and the Red Sea resorts are closing. We were hoping to go in February, and take advantage of historical low prices and kick some much needed hard currency into the economy, but it's becoming harder and harder to justify that with three kids. If it were just Nathan and I, it would be different, but it isn't.

It's very very sad isn't it. Egypt is one of those places I've always wanted to go, but I just can't see how it will be safe again in our lifetimes.

And I mean, the thing that clinched it for me was that Italian tourist guy who was just pinched off the streets in Cairo and tortured to death. You can always not fly via an Egyptian airline. (And honestly, couldn't pay me to get on an Egyptian aircraft now.) But if they're on the look out to pinch people off the streets then... yeah.

But that's their economy. Destroyed probably.

24 hours news channel need to fill their time, so when something big happens like a plane crash, they are assured of hours of coverage and a captive audience. This happened on a Friday, so they now have an entire weekend to keep people enthralled while they look for the plane, show the show, the wreckage, the talking heads, all this fills the hours which means they run commercials-lots of them. There is money to be made, at least on US news networks. I have not turned on a news channel in literally years. I get news text alerts on my phone, that is enough.

And they have all these 'experts' on to talk about nothing at all and state obvious things. I swear, I don't know what the average IQ level is these days. But sheesh.

And it is all speculation until the black box is found. Yeah, the talking heads, they are filler until there is actually something to report.

Honestly they need to s how the wreckage or a ton of people will never believe the plane really crashed.

I had not thought about that part. The conspiracy theories about that Malyasian aircraft were insane.

Mind you some people even when you show them wreckage these days will just insist that the wreckage is faked too.

Yes, the demonising of people with depression after that air crash was horrendous.

Same with those school shootings in AMerica, they increasingly try and blame it on depression.
