If an insane criminal genius like Mello has someone you could call his best friend, that would be Matt. These two go back, way back. As a result, he was partially glad when the community let Matt go for a while.
But now they're back in this mess together, and as much as this community and it's viruses tend to mess with people, they still go together. Matt made that much clear during the Three's Company hell with Prussia, and Mello has every intention to stick to that premise. The one thing Mello is actually thankful for about this community is probably that it gives him a chance to save Matt.

Starting out as common trap-trolls, Michael is one of the few people he'd actually regret if they dropped off the face of the earth. Or the comm. Michael also knows some top-secret information about the Death Note, and a few things about Mello and his plans. In fact he probably knows more about Mello than most other members of the community. Ironically but unsurprisingly, he does not get along with Matt at all.
Michael was one of the first to call after Mello's scarring incident. He was the one who insisted he should get himself patched up somehow, and even organized the means to that end. Mello would hardly admit just how thankful he is for that, but he's looking for some way to return the favor.

He does not have a crush on Naoto, and in all honesty hopes that she will never develope a crush on him, since he wants her out of harm's way as much as possible. And he's well aware that close to him is not 'out of harm's way' in the least.
Mello has been trying to assist her with the case in Inaba as much as possible, and was, in fact, one of the first people to discover her true gender.
They care deeply about one another, but there are a few things Mello would rather keep her out of. Call it protective issues, but he has seen uglier sides of life than she has, and he'd rather not see her go through the same things. He's also set on keeping her safe from Vermouth and her organization, who have marked Naoto as a possible threat.
Gilbert Beilschmidt//Prussia: ♠
After the things that have happened, Mello knows Prussia very, very well. The OT3 virus that hit them and Matt has moved on to the growing stack of LET'S NEVER TALK ABOUT THIS AGAIN, as was to be expected, really.
Prussia has since developed a habit of trolling Matt. Mello can not help finding his reactions amusing, even though insinuating that they're an item is definitely not cool.
Even without the Shadow incident Mello could tell how much and even partially what he tends to repress. The important thing is though, that he can understand Prussia anyway. By his standards they are definitely friends.

Mello mostly trusts Hakuba, which is, in fact, saying a lot. He thinks of Hakuba as not only a fellow detective, but an actually capable one, and, viewing Naoto as something like a younger sister, has absolutely no problem with the two of them being nearly in a relationship. HS AU!Hakuba he found somewhat annoying.
He's not sure how to approach him or if he should say anything at all about the Shadow incident, but it was plain enough to see that Hakuba has piles and piles of repressed things, but at the same time, Mello knows he isn't not one to talk. It's most likely he'll just keep his mouth shut about it all.
All things considered he thinks of Hakuba as a good acquaintance. But since neither of them really opens up, it'll take a while for him to consider him a friend or a close friend.

V, to Mello, has become somewhat of a rolemodel in a vastly different way from L. He admires his resolve as well as his much more practical brilliance, and that he was able to set a revolution in motion. Knowig what will happen to him, Mello has made up his mind not to let him die this time around.

Mello likes her already. She has an amazingly fast mind, and it appears she's somewhat of a psychic as well. Where other people might not see any coherence in her words, he realizes how quickly she draws conclusions and moves on to the next even if just vaguely related topic. He's pretty curious about her all things considered.

Mello finds Ed's world quite intriguing, a feeling that seems to go both ways. They're spending a lot of time just talking about science and explaining their respective worlds to each other. Mello plans on visiting Ed's world and learning some basic alchemy from him at some point.

They were going to collaborate, sharing information on the community's criminals. Mello conveniently knows about Bruce's identity as Batman, but that only furthers his respect for him.
