Today was the blood drive day at the High School where I work. It was an experience with many odd coincidences that are wonderfully remarkable.
I timed the amount of time it took me to fill my pint bag, it was 3 minutes.
The table I was at pointed me directly at a very large crucifix.
For those who joined me at the SJB Luke 18 2007, the music that was playing on the radio was "Total Eclipse of the Heart".
Today is Monday of Holy Week, and I am preparing to enter as deeply as I can into the passion, death and resurrection over the course of this next week.
In the Hebrew way of thinking, blood is a synonym for life. This makes sense, as if you let the blood out of something, it no longer has life.
So, today, as I was giving blood, pondering the crucifix in front of me, I rejoiced that I was entering into the death of death by giving blood. Giving life, I had three minutes of mild discomfort to Christ's three hours of horrible agony. I gave a fraction of my blood to Christ who gave it all. On top of that, I was taken back to the skit that was expertly performed by the cori-team (you guys know who you are and how highly I think of you) and that served to reinforce everything I was experiencing.
Give blood and you give life. Accepting Christ's blood ushers in the gift of eternal life.
