-desk. He was hunched over his desk, paper and instruments strewn everywhere. Strange, it had been so tidy moments ago. Had he done this? He must have; there was no one else in the room with him.

Yes...yes, he was looking for something. But what? And why did he need it? Amon's eyes followed the trail of destruction across his desk, and found it leading toward the far edge. Looking over the edge, he saw his pen, lying on the floor. He bent to pick it up, and from the corner of his eye-

-he was facing the center of the room, looking at a scroll his hands, pen punched clean through the paper at the end of a curved line. There were more lines on the scroll, the ink still fresh and wet. At first they didn't look like anything comprehensive, but the longer Amon stared, the more they seemed to settle into a shape-eerily familiar, but just out of reach. Disturbed, he rolled up the scroll, ink smearing, and looked-

-his hand was on the doorknob and his heart was racing. There was a chill down his spine that he couldn't identify, and Amon was reminded of the stories his mother told him, when he was young and life was simple, of spirits and invisible monsters. On the outside he was composed as ever, but inside he was shaking, and he all but threw the door open in his haste to get out, get the hell out, nearly hitting his Lieutenant in the face with his exit.

The other man started to say something, possibly an apology; but then his eyes fixed just over Amon's shoulder, and his mouth opened wide, and Amon turned-

-they were both in the hallway, facing each other. Neither could explain the shortness of breath, or the adrenaline pumping through their veins.

Behind them, Amon's office was as empty as it ever was.
