i'm no professional critic. i'm just entitled to my opinions, and after listening to pretty. odd, i have many. i have listened to this whole thing and have written some notes down that i would like to share :)
first off: kudos, kudos on the piano and strings usage. they way they weave into your music always amazes me. you also use different instruments like trumpets/brass instruments, it gives a different texture to every song. spencer, i might say. is pulling everything off, you are yet magnifico! though the style has (obvioiusly) changed, you guys still have your creative lyric making powers. oh yeah. if you pay attention enough, you guys like to use the word 'moon' a lot in your songs. same with a certain 'she'. explain here?
ok. now for details. if you care to listen, i'm just bored. (all in order)
#1.we're so starving: i mean, i dont consider it a 'real' song but its a great introduction to the CD. its catchy and funny.
#2.nine in the afternoon: its ok, but repetative. it will get old if you listen to if over and over again, well to me atleast. again, love the strings and brass combo.
#3.she's a handsome woman: i think the guitars purposely sound weird at the beginning. unique lyrics and background vocals. brendon sings different, though. new technique? i dont know but it sounds good :)
#4.do you know what i'm seeing?: hmm... ok dont get mad but this sounds like some acid trip. maybe panic was on lsd? typical rhyming though. (please dont say something like "i want to see if you can write something as artistic and blahblahb as them!!!") i'm not saying that it sucks ok?
#5.that green gentleman: my personal favorite. fast paced, upbeat. the meaning or whatever is nice. its not so hard that i'm scratching my head, trying to figure out what it means but its not plainly obvious either.
#6.i have friends in holy places: well, it's interesting, creative! style is like back in the 90's?
#7.northern downpour: soft and sweet. sleepy- makes you want to reminisce/nostalgic. ryan's voice is amazing. comes together well.
#8.when the day met the night: OKAYYY, another acid trip? "when the sun met the moon, she was drinking tea in the garden..."???? hidden meanings are cool and all but too much metaphors maybe? well, i'll give you kudos for being incredibly creative.
#9.pas de cheval: one word. hilarious! i mean the tune is. i love it! its so cute and spencer did an amazing job and i can actually hear jon!!! woo, go jon!!!!
#10.the piano knows somthing....: spencer!jon! definitly had something to do with the lyrics. ok, ok, since panic created this song, i wont bug them on their beards and hair anymore. haha, silly.
#11.behind the sea: whoa, whoa. whos singing this???!! ryan?? no comment though. (dont worry, its not bad.)
#12.folkin around: hahaha, major fiddles. but what can i expect from a song titled 'folkin around'?
#13.she had the world. kind of medievaly sound. unique in ways. like it ;)
#14.from a mountain in the....: similar to most songs on this cd. not much to say, except that its almost comical in a way.
#15.mad as rabbits: finally!!! ok. nice work, everybody. great song, esp. to end a cd like this.
concluding thoughts: ryans voice is amazing and i'm glad hes getting more parts. they're radiating with .... oddness. though its different from 'a fever you cant sweat out' (and i am truely sad about it) their new music is nothing short from creative. maybe a little too creative. this is why i recommend this cd. it may sound like nothing you've heard them play before but it will grow on you.
favs are: that green gentleman, northern downpour, pas de cheval, the piano knows something i dont know, and mad as rabbits.
