Aki has done an amazing thing with Utahime…she made me consider a tsundere character as a favorite. Normally I don’t go for hotheads, and characters about whom it can be said, “Can’t you do anything unless you have somebody to blame for your actions?” But I adore the main character of this tale, Kain.
Here he is on the cover of this one volume manga:
The story is brief, but full of insight about what makes the main characters tick. I love stories like that. You totally learn why everyone is acting the way they do, and it all makes sense.
So what is it about? Essentially, it takes place in a realm where throughout history, the land has been protected by a male sovereign and a female songstress. But now suddenly, there is a male songstress (and a female sovereign, but unfortunately she doesn’t get much page time). And no, this doesn’t lead to cross dressing or genderbending. It’s really more about breaking down the old ways of thinking and freeing people from the bonds that constrain them.
My only complaint is it should have been longer. When the ending came I was like, “wut? no!”
