Ah it is upon us. Judgement Day.
Most people hate Valentine's Day. It's true. Even most people in relationships (with the exception of that vomit-inducing couple we all know...that is always like kissing and holding hands in public so much that even their friend's kinda want them to break up...or at least kick in their teeth..but no matter..) hate Valentine's Day.
It's a day where guys are forced into spending a shitload of money on their girlfriends or the girl they want to be their girlfriend...
In a world where everyone bitches about how commercialized Christmas is..and how it's not about family anymore..it's amazing how few people call V-Day out for what it is..
It's not that it was a holiday that became too commercialized...it's actually a commercial holiday. It was created around the 17th or 18th century and there are varied accounts as to why it is celebrated...but most involve St. Valentine falling in love with a woman while in prison and leaving his dying letter signed "Your Valentine". Whatever the reason, and there seem to be about 40 different ones, as to how it came about..I find it a little weird that it's even considered an actual holiday...All I know is that Hallmark, Hersey, and florist all over the place are making an absolute killing today.
Personally I'm just looking forward to tomorrow where all the Valentine's candy is half-price...
I know that kinda sounded like a rant from a lonely soul...but to be honest..I'm actually pretty complacent about my life right now..I'm not bitter or angry or anything..and I feel the same way about Valentine's Day every year even if I have someone to "Be Mine" or not..
My true feeling about it..is that it's a cop out.
Look...I dislike relationships. I think they are very unnecessary when you're younger and still trying to figure yourself out. I think it's unwise to strap yourself to someone else who's as lost as you are. But with that being said...if you are in a relationship and feel like you have true strong feelings for the person you're with...why do you feel it's necessary to have a day to celebrate it? I mean...if you're not doing all the little things...the subtle things everyday, every time you're with the person..and showing how you care about them all the time...why try to make up for it all at once with a heart shaped box and some flowers? I think you should always act like it's Valentine's Day. And no I don't mean kissing and nibbling at each other's necks in the dining hall...because seriously....people are eating...come on. But if you truly care for the person you're with...like have genuine feelings that you have trouble expressing sometimes because they scare you as much as they should...you shouldn't need to shell out $150 on the 14th of any month to prove it..
So this Valentine's Day..and everyone from now on...think about the other 364 days of the year when showing you care about someone isn't a rule you're supposed to follow because Hallmark told you to.
