I'm going to have to throw some titles out there, and see if they match up to what you are looking for.

There is a good book by a Roman Catholic -- "Consuming Religion: Christian Faith and Practice in a Consumer Culture," by Vincent Miller. It's a popular press book, not written with citations and such. But it is very insightful, and it does contain some good theoretical analysis as well as some theological reflection.

The following are some books and articles I have read that might prove useful.

Hunter, James Davidson
1982 Subjectivization and the New Evangelical Theodicy. Journal for the
Scientific Study of Religion 21(1):39-47.

Noll, Mark A.
1993 The American Revolution and Protestant Evangelicalism. Journal of
Interdisciplinary History 23(3):615-638.

2001 American Evangelical Christianity: An Introduction. Oxford: Blackwell
Publishers, Inc.

Numbers, Ronald L.
1992 The Creationists: The Evolution of Scientific Creationism. Berkeley:
University of California Press.

Sandeen, Ernest R.
1962 The Princeton Theology: One Source of Biblical Literalism in American
Protestantism. Church History 31(3):307-321.

1967 Toward a Historical Interpretation of the Origins of Fundamentalism.
Church History 36(1):66-83.

Schmemann, Alexander
2002[1963] For the Life of the World: The Sacraments and Orthodoxy.
Crestwood, NY: St. Vladimir's Seminary Press.

Schultze, Quentin
2003 Christianity and the Mass Media in America: Toward a Democratic
Accommodation. East Lansing: Michigan State University Press.
