Dove Ad: Evolution

Oct 16, 2006 12:04

This video, a Dove ad, is a fascinating look at the way beauty is manufactured. It starts with a fairly pretty-but-plain looking model, blemishes and limp hair and all, and turns her into a Tyra Banks-worthy billboard model in sixty seconds. As the end of the commercial says, no wonder our perception of beauty is distorted.

The ad can be found here: Evolution

(You may have to follow the link to the screening room; if so, it's the first ad, and several folks will be happy to note that there's a Jonathan Rhys-Meyers commercial just below the Dove ad.)

Lately i've been fascinated with advertising and images; it has a lot to do with my own recent thoughts on John Berger's Ways of Seeing (as well as the fantastic WoS-superheroes mashup someone did), the Althouse-Feministing debate, and my recent discovery of a blog that discusses the effectiveness of certain advertisements. Oh, and that fantabulous Ok Go! treadmill video, and in fact, YouTube in general. Anyway, i wouldn't be surprised if i end up talking about more of this type of thing soon.
