BIG GAY ROAD TRIP!

Day 2 continued in the theme of being Fabulous and Awesome. starlingthefool and i started the day off by crawling out of bed for free hotel breakfast, then (at least i) went back to bed for another hour's sleep; all that sleep deprivation certainly caught up to me today. We got moving around 11, checked out, then walked across the street to the beach; we were, as advertised, right on the shore of Lake Michigan. We saw some rocks that someone had stacked, took a bunch of pictures, and sat and listened to the waves for a while. It was nice, very peaceful and chill. And then my hand slipped as i was getting up to leave and i sliced my thumb open, hooray. (This is the third injury to a finger on my left hand in what, two or three weeks? Sigh.) It's not too bad, really, and it only hurts when i accidentally squish it. The hard part's been keeping it clean, as we've been running around on lakeshores all day. Then we went to a restaurant in Manastique that made excellent breakfast (for me) and even better pasties (for starlingthefool), and then we rocked out to Meatloaf, and life was good.

We left there and headed northeast, because we'd looked at a map and realized that we could hit all three of the Great Lakes up here in one day if we wanted. So we did. :D We went up to Superior, which was probably my favorite part of the day (even though we skipped the caged bears, because one, it was spendy, and two, it was bears in cages. (starlingthefool was happy to be my accomplice when i set them all free, but i was afraid that maybe i would have to make that awkward call to my boss and be all 'um, can't make it to work, i'm in jail in the UP for freeing the bears.') Anyway, we went up to Whitefish Point Lighthouse, on Superior, which had a lovely beach with awesome smooth stones that we skipped, a lighthouse that was pretty cool, and the Lake Superior Shipwreck Museum, which was expensive as hell, so we didn't go in (although i was able to see the bell of the Edmund Fitzgerald from the doorway).

We then *almost* stayed in a cool, cute cottage on Superior, where we could have written lots of fic and had a bonfire on the beach, but the people who ran the place were a little sketchy and we hadn't gone very far for the day. So we decided to keep on driving, and headed to St. Ignace, better known as the town across the channel from Mackinac Island and the town on the north side of the Mackinac Bridge (which we still haven't actually seen yet, as it's on the south side of this peninsula and St. Ignace is on the north side). We headed straight for Lake Huron and dipped our toes in it (count it! Three Great Lakes, one day), then checked out another lighthouse and pier before getting dinner (on a plank!). St. Ignace is pretty cool in a cute way, and definitely is exactly what you'd expect from a town on Lake Huron across from Mackinac. Now we're holed up in a lovely cheap motel (hey, they have wifi) watching Return of the King and basking in the glory that is the internet. While drinking more whiskey, of course. (That's the only real problem with road trips; all that driving really cuts into your drinking time.)

Tomorrow... well, tomorrow we will probably drive like motherfuckers, seeing as we're about 8 hours from Chicago. But! I'm expecting we'll have a good night's sleep again tonight, and will hopefully get moving before noon, yo. And, if not, we don't have three lakes to visit today, so i bet we'll get some road under us. We don't have much in the way of anything planned from here on out, other than getting to Chicago sometime in the next two days, so that's cool.

I've been taking pictures like a motherfucker; i tried to put them on flickr, as it seemed like the easiest place to organize them, but then i didn't have any cell signal for pretty much the entire day, so i only got four pictures uploaded today (and two of them uploaded all funky, thanks to the spotty signal, although they look kind of cool). I'll try to get the rest uploaded today--maybe through my computer, now that i think of it--but regardless, they're all here to check out: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gollumgollum/

So far, this one's my favorite, i think:

That right there pretty much sums things up, yo.

awesome sauce, road trip, aw yes indeed it's fun times fun times, we're gonna make it after all, on the road to nowhere, pictures
