Denise's Bat Mitzvah
Last Saturday was my oldest niece's Bat Mitzvah. (No, her name isn't Denise, that was a bad joke). She did a very good job, and everything was very nice... but boy. It has been a long time since I went to Reform services. Monica, is it normal to skip large chunks of the "Shabbat Service II" in the siddur? (I'm blanking on the name, but it's the one after Gates of Prayer, but not brand spanking new.) Also, I didn't like the organ during davening at the Conservative shul I went to during graduate school, and I am still not a fan of organs playing during davening. Or organs playing during a moment of "silent prayer". Organ music at a concert: fine.
But the family part was very nice (well, except for the sad fact that Joy's mom was not in any condition to travel there), and everything else worked out pretty well.
