I bought a couple pair of Swedish goggles for the swim season of my freshman year of high school (swim season 1999-2000). I bought two pairs (a red pair and a purple pair) so that I could mix up the halves and never have to wonder which pair was mine, mine would always be the red and purple pair. I lost one pair eons ago, but the other... the other has faithfully been with me since that swim season. Last week the strap snapped. Luckily there was enough of the strap still together that I could try a knot and still use them. Today they snapped for real and I can't fix them.
Sad.
I spent most of my work out thinking about how long I've had those goggles. I've had those goggles since the last millennium. I've had those goggles longer than I've had most of my friends. Those goggles got me through 8 years of school, multiple life guard certifications, and my SCUBA certification (when I had to swim a bazillion laps every week to prove to the instructor that I could in fact swim).
Today I borrowed a pair of goggles so I could finish my workout and I have to say... the world looked pretty smishnyy̆ (that's funny in Ukrainian... one of the very few words I learned this summer from my life guards) when it wasn't tinted red and purple. Everyone constantly asked me if it gave the world a 3D look. And every time I had to refrain from responding that the world is already in 3D dummy so no, my goggles didn't make the world anymore 3D than it normally is.
Oh well. Perhaps I can spend tomorrow, my day off, finding another pair. After ten years with my Swedish goggles I don't think I can go back to regular ones. The only problem with that is only specialty swim stores sell them. I wonder where one of those is... There used to be one over at University Mall. I'll have to check that out. Any trip to University Mall is welcome since even if the store isn't there anymore... Dunkin' Donuts is. I'm totally willing to use a mocha coffee to either celebrate or drown my sorrows... depending on which is more appropriate. :)
