I hate the Eagles. Don't get me wrong, I was never a huge T.O. fan... but after all the stuff that's happened in the last 2 weeks I am the hugest T.O. fan ever. In fact, I might get one of those BigHead things that you see in commercials.
Anyway, I like T.O. now because he's standing up to the demon... the organization that is the Eagles. Over the last 3 or 4 seasons, the Eagles have made a name for themselves by cutting great veteran players, bashing them in the public, and resigning them cheap after free agency ends. This happened with Hugh Douglas a few years back, they tried it with Bobby Taylor but he wised up and turned down their offer, and most recently they did this to Jeremiah Trotter.
What do the Eagles do that is so wrong? Well, first they cut a guy that has 2 years on his contract remaining. In case you didn't know, the last 2 years are the big payout years. We see a headline that says "Mike Vick Signs for $100 Million for 7 Years." What that really means is this:
Signing Bonus: 2 Million/year every year of the contract (even if they are released or cut)
Year 1: $ 6 Million
Year 2: $ 8 Million
Year 3: $10 Million
Year 4: $11 Million
Year 5: $12 Million
Year 6: $20 Million
Year 7: $23 Million
These are just examples it's not really anyone's contract. Anyway, if you look at what the Eagles are doing, they're taking the majority of the contract from the players. In this case $43 Million of the contract is gone. Also keep in mind that out of the $57 Million the player does make they have to pay all of their employees out of... based on the $100 Million salary. Agents average 15% in the NFL. So out of that $57m, $15m goes to the agent because he has to pay based on the total, not the total earned. After that they pay their personal trainers and publicists and all those people. I know these players aren't exactly struggling to pay the rent, but at some point the franchise has some ethical dilemma.
The Eagles cut Hugh Douglas and re-signed him for less than half of what he was scheduled to make. Other teams renegotiate contracts but they approach the player. They don't release the player via pink slip in the locker and then bash them to the public.
In a press conference this offseason, Andy Reid said Jeremiah Trotter "had lost a step" and that "his age was starting to show." Therefore, most teams didn't give Trotter a chance and he only got 3 offers. One from the Eagles (that was worth less than 1/3 of his scheduled payment), one from the Houston Texans (such a great dynasty), and one from the Cleveland Browns (promising franchise). Of those three, he was pretty much forced to return to the Eagles if he wanted to see the playoffs ever again.
Because of all this, I hate the Eagles and I'm glad a player is finally standing up to this unethical and immoral franchise. Even if that player is T.O., a guy I've always liked but never loved until now. I hope they lose everyone and are left with Donovan forever. Then we'll see that a quarterback will never win a ring on his own.
Tom Brady and Joe Montana were successful riding on the coattails of a great defense and the 2 best receiving cores ever assembled, but let's just keep pretending they're miracle men. After all, it makes for better NFL videos on ESPN.
