Ianto received an illogical personality transplant in s2 to become the witty coffee boy instead of the emo coffee boy. As witty coffee boy, he was mildly amusing at best and bland and illogically developed at worst. I don't hate Ianto, but I am completely baffled by everything about his arc, including how Jack making him kill his robot girlfriend led to stopwatch sexytiems two episodes later, and why exactly Torchwood fandom is so in love with him.

Yeah, I went into TW *knowing* all about Ianto/Jack, on the lookout for signs, indicators, anything....and was still totally confused! :/ It's even worse in s2 when they have the flashback epp with all those homoerotic overtones between them that make no sense if he's in love with Lisa all this time...and then they're kissing and it's like, "wait, when did this happen?" He was more enjoyable in s2 though....
