Doctor Who: Some of my favourite Companion moments

May 08, 2010 13:25

It is not hockey game time yet, alas, so I have turned to Doctor Who to distract me. *twitches*

1). This is me, getting out

I love Martha’s “getting out” speech. Martha has such a powerful internal strength, and this moment is the epitome of it. I think being with the Doctor taught Martha how to be a little bit selfish-she’s always been the one to look after other people. First her family, then the Doctor, and now her family again. And she accepts that responsibility with grace and dignity, often swallowing down her own pain and keeping it to herself. But in this moment, she does what’s best for herself. I love that she recognizes herself as brave and strong and capable-she doesn’t need the Doctor’s approval or his love or whatever to validate herself. It's such a brilliant moment of self-worth and realization. Being Martha Jones is enough and the Doctor would be lucky to have her. It’s also such a brave and strong thing to be able to do-walking away from this person whose life she had become so wrapped up in--and she did it because it was the best thing for herself. Martha Jones, you ARE a star.

2. So I could come back.... shut up

Remember when there was a period of time during which reunion fics about the Doctor finding his way to Pete’s World were all the rage? Yeah-how much do I love that, in the end, it was Rose finding her way back to him? I love that about Rose-she doesn’t just accept what the world hands her. She could have settled for second best in Pete’s World. She could have resumed things with Mickey even though she didn’t truly love him or she could have spent the rest of her time pining and waiting for the Doctor to come back to her. But she didn’t. She didn’t just ACCEPT what the universe chose for her. She made her own choices and she built dimension cannons and helped Donna save the world and got her man back at the same time. I love that about the way RTD wrote his companions-they weren’t passive, sit-at-home types. Rose wanted something so she went out and did it.

3). I’m sorry.... but you’re going to die

My very favourite theme of RTD’s Who was Ordinary People Making Strong and Brave Choices. Nothing encapsulates this more than Donna sacrificing her life in Turn Left to save the world. The Turn Left Donna, the one without the Doctor, is not an entirely sympathetic person-she’s self-centered, she’s crass, she’s unsympathetic to the plight of the world around her. And yet, despite all that, there’s this core of unchanged Donnaness, that gives her the strength to accept what Rose is telling her and to end her own life to set things right again. How brave and awesome is that? Donna Noble, you are brilliant, and thanks to Turn Left, I believe in you, even without your memories of the Doctor.

Amy Pond has yet to have a scene that affects me quite like these did, but hopefully she will get one before the season is done. :D
