Sherlock rosined his bow, and the dust that sprinkled his fingers erased the sensation of blood… It had never bothered him before.

And I agree-John wouldn't. (This is in part some headcanon background for Sherlock's solicitude: "You have killed a man." But as we know, John could just smile and say "he wasn't a very nice man...")
