(I feel like that should be translated into Latin, a la "Latina est gaudium et utilis!")
Fandom is inescapable:
I was getting my hair cut and the highlights re-highlighted... whatever that's called (took an epic three hours! no idea why) and the lady was talking to me about her daughter and the stuff she bought her for Christmas.
HAIRDRESSER: She's really into this stuff like Doctor Who. I bought her this thing for Christmas. No idea what it was. A screwdriver or something.
ME: Sonic Screwdriver?
HAIRDRESSER: Yeah. She's just really into that stuff. I don't get it. Also she likes The Avengers -- you know... Thor and Loki and stuff? She really likes Loki. I got her action figures. She loves that stuff. She really likes Loki. She says she feels sorry for him. She tried to explain it, but I thought it was stupid.
ME: Yeah, I think a lot of times "I love Loki" is just code for "Tom Hiddleston is hot!"
HAIRDRESSER: Yeah, I bought her The Complete Guide to Tom Hiddleston, too.
Turns out her daughter writes fanfiction, too. :-P
Fandom is interesting:
I was talking to an awesome elderly Welsh gentleman of my acquaintance. He was once a History professor, and is chock full of interesting historical information. Anyway, I was talking about my 10th grade British Literature woes (If I haven't complained here -- the class is completely apathetic. I don't mind corralling insanity. But no energy is a really tough thing to deal with (for me, anyway). He asked me what sorts of things I did to try to generate enthusiasm. I was about to explain that I try to connect the literature to modern media etc. and said "Adaptation is one of the things that most fascinates me. I love the BBC Sherlock series, for example."
ELDERLY GENTLEMAN [henceforth EG]: You mean the series with Daniel Cumberbatch?
ME: Benedict, yes.
EG: Oh yes, Dominic Cumberbatch.
ME: Benedict, yes, that one.
EG: Yes, Benedict Cumberbatch. You know much of that was filmed right around the corner from us.
ME: In Cardiff, right?
EG: Yes, some of it was right down the street from the University. Though some was filmed in London.
ME: Like the scene on the roof of Bart's. That was shot on location.
EG: [note: I am bad with lefts and rights and names, so if I make a hash of this, it is my fault, not his] Yes. Do you know, that where Benedict Cumberbatch was standing, was directly above the Henry VIII gate. That is the only statue of Henry VIII in London. And [something about greater and lesser Bartholomew gates that I honestly can't remember] and if the camera had panned a little bit to the right you could have seen Smithfield Market where many Christian martyrs were killed in the 1500s, and William Wallace and [something about the Peasant's Revolt]. Benedict Cumberbatch could have seen all those things from where he was standing on St. Bartholomew's Hospital.
