Labor pains, and all that...

Oct 13, 2009 01:33

Well, it's finally happened. I've become a mommy. Andrew Sterrett Counter was born August 13th, 2009. He weighed 8lbs. 13 oz. and was born at 9:13am. Apparently, he's adpoted the Sterrett family lucky number of 13...
I went into labor on August 11th, at 11:40am. Well, that was when I got my first real contraction. And they kept steadily coming about every half hour or so, for about a day and a half. They were like really bad period cramps. But, around 5pm on the 12th, they got bad enough I couldn't really talk through them, they just made me want to cry. That's when we went to the hospital. The terrible thing was, they checked, and I was only dialated 1.5 cm. and you're supposed to get to 10 before you can push.
They let me stay there for an hour, to see if I dialated any more, which thankfully I did. My mom was in West Virginia, for the State Fair, when I called her. She drove back to help me out. We called Sam's mom after that, and my Grandma Alice. So, I had a good support group.
Labor was really quite painful! At least until the epidural guy got there. My contractions kept getting steadily worse, and more intense. And I had no clue what was going on...like when I would get to push, or what. All I knew was that I wanted my epidural WAY BAD...and there was only one guy in the whole hospital who could do it, and *he* was in surgery.
Finally around 11pm he came in, and got me on the drip. *That* made it all better...I fell alsleep through the next round of contractions. My waiting party pooped out as well. Grandma Alice and Sam's mom went home to sleep. My mom tried to sleep in the waiting room, and Sam had the fold out sofa in the birthing suite.
But, around 4am the epidural started wearing off. I could start feeling the contractions again. And that sucked! So, they had to give me a booster pack. *THANK GOD* And that got me through until Andy was born.
Although, that second one had started to wear off by the time it was time to push. So I pushed *REAL HARD* for about 20 minutes, cause I didn't want to feel all that pain again...
And, Andy popped out of me pretty quickly, or so I'm told by the hospital staff. They had never seen a first time mother push such a big baby through that fast. So, apparently, I'm a good birther. And, thank goodness I was a gymnast when I was little, and still try to do yoga moves. 'Cause I would have been lost without the muscle control.
Andy was so big and strong when he came out! He pushed his little head up and, according to MY mom, spurted out all his amniotic fluid like a whale. And he had those little arms and legs kicking out! And his eye were wide open and looking around for me. So, in spite of the fact that he was wet, warm and gooey, they laid him upon my chest with the cord still attached, and we looked at each other and said "Hey".
There's more to post, but I'll let that go for another day. Here I am 2 months out of labor, into motherhood. I'm very happy with my son, and with my family. I Love Everybody!
