Don Luis Manzano Casillas had strong hands.
At eight years old, he was a happy boy and would laugh and play, but every so often get pains in his hands, go into a corner and cry. People thought that he was unstable. He was placed in an orphanage, since officials assumed that his mother, a mere 24 years old would not be able to care for him. He came back to her care two years later only to begin working at age 10. His father was an alcoholic at 16, and left the family several years after Luis' birth. His mother told young Luis his father had died.
He married Petra Torres, and started his family on a ranch in Guadalajara, Mexico.
At age 26 he was diagnosed with severe rhumatoid arthritis. He would come home from working in a textile factory and have to ice his hands for several hours every day to help the swelling and pain.
He had 15 children, 11 of which survived to live long lives. Maria Rosalia, Maria Guadalupe, Maria, Ramona, Eduardo, Juanita, Jose Luis, Teresa, Paula, Virginia, and Pablo Antonio.
He molded together a family of strong people, loving people, compassionate people. They will forever hold their unity.
Don Luis Manzano had strong hands. He will be missed.
