mid-Winter garden

I did a good job planning my Winter garden this year. I have been harvesting beets, carrots, parsnips, kale, chard, mizuna, arugula, cress, violas, and parsley. Today I picked mostly-frozen greens and made an amazing salad. crisp mizuna, chilled cress, and the wild flavor of arugula, tossed with a little bit of Italian dressing. The veggies were so GREEN. I love having fresh greens all year.

The only thing I'd do different is mulch around the plants next Autumn. The rain falling on bare dirt splashes an awful lot of soil on the greens.

I am moving from one plot in our P-Patch to another plot. The new one will be on the North edge of the garden so my trellis doesn't shade anyone, notably the adjacent plot on the East who blamed the failure f her garden entirely on me. (My trellis, which cast a shadow on her garden one hour before the trees would have anyways, apparently destroyed her garden but allowed the plot to the North of mine to thrive and overflow. Whatever.)

The trellis was taller than I wanted it to be anyways, since I had to replace it mid-season, with things already planted around it, and wasn't able to bury it as much as I wanted to. Today I dug a gigantic hole in the new plot and anchored my trellis. It's a nice, easy-to-harvest 5'2", just like me. (The height, not the easy-to-harvest. No jokes.) It's also really stable. No more collapsing tomato tree. I started moving a few of my plants over as well. The mustards and herbs and such I'll move, the root crops I said I'd either use or harvest by mid-February so the new tenant can take over.

I am sad to have lost all the effort I put into compost, planting perennials, and allowing seeds to naturalize, but this is a better spot for me overall.

It was nice to spend a couple of hours gardening in the sun today. I bundled up in layers of wool, then sweated so hard the sweat was running into my eyes. I'm not in favor of global climate change, but as long as we've got it anyways I'm going to go out and enjoy the sunshine! It was still cold, and my hands were numb by the time I was done, but the sun on my face felt wonderful.
