Ramblin', where to begin?
Well, it's been one of those predictably periodic pauses in posting. Please pardon my propensity to p's. Life continues for the most part to be incredibly satisfactory, and I've been spending most of my time living it, instead of writing about it. I continue to have not made much of a dent in unpacking, but seeing as the last time I was completely out of boxes was high school, that's unsurprising. Still, the new house is quite nice. My view,
let me show you it. See that hill? That's roughly where BART is. It's a fun walk...
My girl, linen and curls, lips parting like a flag all unfurled
Emily continues to be pretty much the grandest thing on two legs, which, given the wave of bipedalism that's been sweeping the planet in recent millenia, is saying something. This weekend we'll be at
Maker Faire in the Carnivale Mechanique area, so if you're going to be there, swing by and say hi (or hunt me down via the cell phone I will be attempting to pay mildly more attention to than usual). Emily is there as part of the Steam Team, and I'm envisioning my role in the weekend will be along the lines of table watching, parasol holding, general Farm Boy Wesley 'As you wish'ing and the now obligatory grinning like a loon.
Waylay the din of the day, boats bobbing in the blue of the bay
In miscellaneous news, The Decemberists show was great. I hadn't actually gotten around to purchasing the
new album beforehand, so I was unaware that it was essentially a rock opera-ish concept album, which got played in its entirety (along with some older stuff) at the show. It was pretty epic, as was
the venue, which is also where
Underworld is playing in August. It doesn't look like Underworld has sold out yet. This is a crime. You should help do something about that. They've been an amazing show every time I've seen them. Backing up a little bit, I really liked the opening band for The Decemberists, Other Lives.
Here is an entirely acceptable cover of Leonard Cohen's The Partisan that is sadly not on the album I bought, and
this seems to be their big single. Cellos make everything better. That pretty much sums up what I've been listening to recently, excepting a
Yelworc binge in a vain attempt to salvage some shreds of my former goth/industrial credibility.
Ok, sick of this update now. Let's just cover the rest of media watch quickly and then sign off. Haven't really been watching much. Spring and Summer are always sort of distressing as far as movies go. I'm sure I'll eventually see Star Trek, though I'm in no rush. I'm interested in
Moon. I'm curious what the guy who did
Brick (which was pretty much my favorite movie in 2005) does with a budget in
The Brothers Bloom, and being a Jarmusch fan, I'd like to see
The Limits of Control if it ever actually comes here (it says it released on May 1st? Did I miss it? That seems unlikely), and that's pretty much all that's on my immediate radar, though Fall is meant to bring
the new Gilliam.
Bookwise I've been all over the map. I finally got around to reading
Tigana, which helped remind me how much I genuinely loved fantasy, before I realized that so much of it was so very, very bad. Also finally got around to some Hesse, beginning with
Steppenwolf.
Siddhartha is queued up somewhere in the pile as well. It suddenly occurs to me just how much I've been reading recently, so I'm not going to mention them all, but it's been the usual mix of fantasy, scifi, slipstreamish stuff, actual literature, and math texts (Abstract Algebra and Algebraic Topology mostly, with a dash of Noncommutative Geometry). I'm now rereading the ever excellent
Anubis Gates.
Oh, yes, also I randomly stopped drinking soda some months ago, and because I never developed a coffee or tea habit, this means I'm more or less caffeine free. It was surprisingly not difficult, as I find most things I embark upon on a whim are. It's the things I actually have to think about that are tricky.
And if you're not already aware, I finally got one of those silly twitter accounts. Absolutely everything related to the golden mean was taken, so I had to resort to a pro-sloth user name. I'm xenarthra over there. I still can't for the life of me figure out why the service exists, and (not so) secretly think the internet would be a more interesting place if it didn't, but who am I to judge?
And now, the weekend.
Summer arrives with a length of lights
