10 things that haven't happened yet but might someday to William Charles Golden Renard’s life.

1) Tyrell lifted his poured the amber liquid down his throat, his grin wide as he patted his companion on the shoulder. “Billy, you’ve had a thing for redheads since we were seven years old. The moment I saw you grin at Sara from across the room that night I knew that was it for you. You were going to marry that girl.” The room cheered and toasted the happy couple.

2) The intercom sounds, “Paging Dr. Renard, You’re needed in surgery, Dr. William Renard.” In a panic, Bill tears away from his sleeping girlfriend. The young resident pulls on his scrub top and carefully lifts the young woman on to a nearby cot in the locker room. She’s been on call as long as he has and he does not want to wake her. Cursing, he throws his possessions everywhere in a frantic search. Finally he locates the red scrub cap he was looking for and pulls it on over his mop of dark hair. He sprints down the hall as quickly as he can, barreling into the sterile room where an unconscious patient is waiting. His attending smiles ruefully at him and turns to the rest of the team. “Bill here is our top resident but quite often can’t get to surgery on time without a special announcement.”

3) “You think we’d just forget about what your father did?” Nesbitt had 15 year old Billy by his collar.

“I am not the miserable bastard my father was. I was 7 years old! What could I have done?” Billy pleaded, looking into the eyes of many people, many he did not recognize, several he did, included the parents of David Hatcher, the young man he saw ridiculed and murdered when both he, Billy, and David were so young. He attempted a swift kick at Nesbitt.

“Don’t believe Nesbitt! He was his partner! He probably killed half your family members!” It was no use, they did not care, even at the young age of 15, Billy resembled Chuck Golden far too much.

4) “Billy! No fair!” Billy’s 3 year sister squirmed and whined when he picked her up and attempted to force pajamas on her. Billy was momentarily at a loss at why he had volunteered to babysit. “Jonathan and Lindsay don’t have to go to bed! It’s not fair, Billy!”

Billy rolled his eyes and looked to the stairs as if he could see the family room where his 7 and 11 year old siblings were glued to the television. He looked sternly at the youngest but her pout quickly dissolved any chance of Billy being strict. He was a pushover to his siblings and always had been.

“Alright, Hannah. If you put on your pajamas and brush your teeth you can stay up til the end of the movie. Deal?”

5) “Please don’t Bill, please! We all know you are a solider, you can fight right here! Here with me!” Billy’s girlfriend tried furiously to snatch the Marine propaganda from his hands.

He frowned; she didn’t understand, she couldn’t.

“I have to! It’s the right thing to do. And anyway, how else do you expect me to pay for med school?”

The girl argued that Kayhan and Macaria had more than enough money and they were proud of him for wanting to be a doctor. He shook his head, they had paid for his undergraduate education; he couldn’t take more from them. Not when they had Hannah and Jon and Lindsay. Jon would be in college soon enough as it was.

The girl persisted. “I will talk you out of this, Bill, I will.”

6) The basement smelled like sweat and cheap cologne. 15 year old Billy, Gopher, and Tyrell were downstairs huddled around the television, waiting for the girls to arrive. Finally Kayhan calls down the stairs, “Billy, uh, I mean, Bill, the girls are here. I’m sending them down.”

“Thanks Dad,” Billy says, blushing a little. The boys hear giggling and prancing footsteps as the girls come down the stairs.

“He is so cute,” one girl says to another. They greet the boys who share a blush.

“Hi Marianna,” Billy smiles at one of the girls.

“Hi Billy,” Marianna smiles back. “You know, you don’t look anything like your dad. He doesn’t have freckles or moppy hair like you. Hmm. Is he seeing anyone?”

They other girls agree with Marianna, mentioning how Billy is also much less built than his father. Billy was mortified. Never before had he thought about how different he looked than Kayhan.

“Uh,” Billy tries to respond, one hand automatically over his hair, the other covering a particularly freckled part of his cheek. Tyrell was biting the insides of cheeks so he wouldn’t laugh. It was Gopher who finally spoke up.

“Uh, he’s married to Bill’s mom, so yeah,” says Gopher.

“Ethan,” Marianna says, “How do you know?”

“It’s Gopher,” he responds, “and because they are. Duh.”

The girls leave shortly and within an hour the boys decide to swear off girls for another few years.

7) Billy is 17. Mac gives him a kiss and straightens his tie before he walks out to his car. He drives an old Trans Am. Girls hate it, guys love it. He knocks on the door of his date’s house and she answers, her light blue prom dress gleaming in the moonlight. Billy opens his mouth to greet her but his breath catches in his throat. He has scarcely seen anything as beautiful as the girl in front.

“Billy?” the girl says with a smile. “Earth to Billy?”

“You look amazing,” he says, handing her the bouquet of pink flowers he picked out for her.

8) The same thing happens every day before the mail comes. Billy waits nervously for what seems like hours. His parents try to calm him down but it is no use. Finally, the mail falls through the slot and Billy dives for it, scooping it up, going through it haphazardly, tossing many pieces on the ground. Today is the day however, it came, the letter he was waiting for. He tears it open, hope spelled across his eyes. He holds up the letter with a grin in his face.

“I got in! I’m going to college! I got in!”

9) Billy steps up to the plate. He positions himself and listens as the commentator, a guy in his math class in fact, announces his name. The cheerleaders dance around and cheer for him. Tyrell and Gopher are one the bench behind him. Billy watches the pitch and with a loud crack the bat connects. He runs like he never has before rounding the bases as the outfielders stumble to catch the ball. Only when he hears the crowd cheering ‘HOME RUN’ does he register what just happened.

10) “Billy? Can I talk to you?” Billy looks up from his medical text book to see his little brother Jonathan looking flustered. Billy picks up the pajama clad boy and sits him next to him.

“Of course, Jon. What’s going on? Can’t sleep?”

“I’m scared.” Jon hugged his big brother. This happened from time to time. Billy talked with Jonathan until he felt sleepy and settled enough to go to bed. Billy wondered why Jonathan went to their parents but he didn’t mind comforting and tucking in his brother, he enjoyed it even.
