Every night before Billy falls asleep his day replays in his mind. This has happened for as long as he can remember; originally it was a defensive mechanism of sort, a way to always be on his toes even when he was falling asleep, but presently this habit is nothing but a way to keep a mental scrapbook documenting the new found happiness in his life. He is comfortable enough to let his eyelids droop when Kayhan tucks him. He feels safe enough to roll drowsily after Macaria kisses him goodnight. Still, Billy’s mind is full and he will not sleep until the day is fully digested. For once, this fact makes Billy smile rather than dread forthcoming nightmares.
The day began with Mac cooking breakfast for the three of them, waffles with fresh fruit, one of Billy’s favorites. Upon hearing laughter Billy had crept down early and caught a glimpse of Kayhan teasing Mac and kissing her on the nose while she was cooking. Billy loved to hear Mac giggle, she did it so infrequently and it was such a happy sound. Kayhan always made her giggle. Kayhan made Billy giggle too for that matter.
After breakfast Kayhan and Billy cleaned up and then watched cartoons while Mac got some work done she needed to do. All three of them took Chocie for a walk, not without Mac snapping many photos of the happy group. Later, Kayhan decided it was essential to treat them all to ice cream and the best ice cream place he knew was close to Central Park.
Complete with the dog, they piled into a cab and set off. Billy held Mac’s hand nervously. He hated the park and Mac knew it. In fact, she seemed to be genuinely surprised that he agreed to go when given the option to spend the afternoon elsewhere. Billy was determined however. He would go to the park and he wouldn’t be scared and he wouldn’t cry. The bad men wouldn’t come after them and if they did he was safe. He was with Mac and Kay. He was with his family. Family was stronger than bad men, Billy knew that. His life was with his family now, Billy decided, not with the fear of the bad men. The bad men would never find Billy.
Yes, today the bad men did not find Billy and they wouldn’t tomorrow. That was enough for now. It had been a big day full of assessment and now it was time to fall asleep. Billy’s life would still be with his family tomorrow.
