There was a giant squid. He didn't believe the other students when they said so on the trip across the lake when they got to Hogwarts on the first day, but everyone he asked since then agreed. There was a giant squid in the lake.

Which meant, he decided with eleven-year-old certainty, that it was his job to face this monster. He was a Gryffindor, which meant he had to be brave against everything that scared him. Which, of course, included monsters.

A little while later some older students found him gasping at the edge of the lake, shaking and wet. They brought him to the medical wing immediately, and one stayed long enough to find out what had happened to scare the boy so, since he hadn't been near the Forbidden Forest.

She left a few minutes later laughing, because it might have been adorably misguided for a child to attack the harmless giant squid, the fact it was the squid patting him lightly on the head at his challenge that sent him in hysterics was amazing. This little muggle born will make for a great Gryffindor one day, she thought, and only a little sarcastically.
