Favourites (in no particular order):
1.) Star Wars: A New Hope, Original Theatre version (part of my childhood)
2.) Something Wild (Jeff Daniels and Melanie Griffith on a road trip that goes very wrong c/o everyone's favourite psycho, Ray Liotta)
3.) The Enemy Below (Robert Mitchum in command of a WWII submarine hunter stalked by a U-boat; high tension and also clear inspiration for original series Star Trek's cloaked Romulans)
4.) Richard III (Ian McKellen as Richard. Inspired, just inspired. Shakespeare couldn't write history but, boy, could he write drama.)
5.) Bridge Over the River Kwai (Alec Guiness wrestles with his conscience)
Guilty Pleasures:
1.) Up Pompeii (or, indeed, Up The Chastity Belt. Frankie Howerd: ooh, err, missus)
2.) Carry on Cleo (Kenneth Williams as Julius Caesar: once seen, never forgotten)
3.) Braveheart (great movie-making; rubbish history)
4.) The Raven (Vincent Price hams up Edgar Allen Poe)
5.) The Fellowship of the Ring (good movie but why did they have to i) make the Hobbits Irish (JRR must be spinning in his grave) and ii) change the story by beefing up Arwen's role; she may be a pretty face but I seem to recall a MALE Elf called Glorfindel... They 'sexed up' Tolkien for the movies: ugh! I still cried though.)
