CHARACTER NAME: Jake the Dog
FANDOM: Adventure Time
CHRONOLOGY: After Season 1
CLASS: Class: Hero; Alignment: Good
SUPERHERO NAME: Mister Stretchy Gut
ALTER EGO: Jake (the Dog)
BACKGROUND:
Jake comes from the fabulous Land of Ooo, a post-apocalyptic, sugary, silly, happy, but deadly land. This place is fit with talking mushrooms, candy people, and a general lack of humans (Finn's status is as the last human of Ooo). His parents are Joshua and Margret, who found his adoptive brother Finn stuck on a leaf of boom-boom (poop!). It's safe to say Finn and Jake grew up with each other, as Finn's parents were nowhere to be found and Joshua and Margret took care of the two.
Jake's role in the Land of Ooo is being a hero, and while Finn is the father figure of the very word in Ooo, Jake is there to battle monsters and wrestle with trolls along with him. The two go on adventures daily, seeing as adventuring is their main hobby. They gets themselves into all kinds of predicaments, but that's what the Land of Ooo is famous for: predicaments that you can always get yourself out of. Jake, in one episode, is said to have been given his magical powers by rolling in a pile of mud -- however, he does not entirely recall whether this is true or not.
Jake's favorite people would be Finn, and Lady Rainicorn. Jake, while being his best friend in the whole wide world, acts as a mentor to Finn, helping him talk to girls, or helping him getting out of talking to girls! He knows that Finn has a crush on Princess Bubblegum, so Jake'll try to help him with that whenever he can. Lady Rainicorn, on the other hand, is Jake's girlfriend. She speaks Korean, which is probably the only reason Jake speaks it, too. They get along like cheese and breadsticks, fit with "jokes" that Finn probably wouldn't understand. They both enjoy playing the viola, too, which is Jake's 2nd biggest hobby. And he's pretty good at it!
PERSONALITY:
Jake... is a light-hearted kind of dog. He's a good guy, he's a hero. Although not as obsessed with accomplishing every task needed to be done in the most righteous manner like his best bud/human friend Finn, Jake still sees himself as a naturally caring, loveable hero of a dog. However, righteousness is not as important to him, nor is absolute justice. In this way he can be a slacker, a bit easier to sway into the forces of evil, a moreover stretchy kind of character. He even acknowledges the fact that he isn't always 100% certain of his true intents, like in "Gut Grinder" where he becomes uncertain whether he is the one stealing gold from people, or not. He also just states things that can lead you to believe his intents aren't always that good, like only helping the babies (and only the babies!) in "Freak City". Still, you have to believe Jake is a good guy, because he isn't all that old and wise; he struggles in a way too, like Finn, and while he's not a 13-year old boy going through FEELINGS and EMOTIONS he still has a somewhat immature heart.
Jake's laid-back attitude causes him to rely much on his magical dog powers (basically stretching into any shape/size/dimension). He's a pretty lazy dog sometimes, having Finn get him out of his predicaments and plot-holes. He's also more irresponsible, only coming to aid of Finn at a time that he's most needed, when he probably should have been there earlier, fighting the battle alongside. But, in this way, you could say Jake is a worthy mentor, possibly letting Finn learn the ropes himself, rather than ending the battle right away. Jake, to Finn, is a pretty wise dog, but in reality, he only knows as much as he knows, which isn't all that much. He hasn't been through every nook and cranny of the world, so he can't always give the best advice to the poor boy, but he does try hard to make it good. And what Finn doesn't know can't hurt him, right?
Jake, while lazy, and sort of reliable, cares a lot about his buds, like in "My Two Best Friends" he tries to find a way to spend time with both Finn and Lady Rainicorn, after feeling guilty for hanging out with one and not the other. He does get a bit jealous when the two start spending time with each other instead, which goes to show you how indecisive he can be (FEEL ONE WAY AND NOT THE OTHER, GEEZ!!), but still, he cares a lot about them, which he does inevitably show. However, if that bud is Marceline, you can expect Jake to hid in fear, because vampires seriously scare him. Which is saying a lot, since Jake isn't easily moved by just about anything.
POWER:
ONE: Jake holds the amazing ability to stretch himself into any shape or size. He can modify all dimensions of his golden gut of a body, shrinking down all his internal organs to one thumb while he's bit by a vampire on his neck.
TWO: Jake can calm people down with his saliva. Hyperventilating 'cause you lost the world spelling bee? Well, no fear! Jake's here.
THREE: Keeping his Dog Form. So really, you're seeing a talking dog.
[CHARACTER SAMPLES]
COMMUNITY POST (FIRST PERSON) SAMPLE: [Turn on the video feed and you'll find a golden dog, strolling carelessly through the streets of the city, eyeing every nook and corner sideways. Who's he?]
Welcome to the city, huh. Well, this place ain't so bad. Could use some more bacon joints, but hey, whatever man! [He flicks his wrist a bit, as to emphasize a point.]
What's up with these little old ladies every corner I turn? Where are all the [--He pauses, fighting back a giggle] cute girls. You can't have a creepy dank city without any cute girls! That ain't right, I tell you! [He starts shaking his tiny fist at nobody in particular before realizing--] Oh wait.
Man, if Finn were here he'd try and help all these old folk cross the street. He's such a good guy. And my pal! I'll tell ya... [He rubs his chin and closes his eyes as if thinking.] What this city needs is some love and care. That's what he would say.
...So somebody better get on that quick, I've got to find some grub! [He gets on his four legs and starts walking in the other direction--] Oh yeah, and Finn. [--click.]
LOGS POST (THIRD PERSON) SAMPLE: There sure was nothing like a good old string of his viola to get ol' boy like Jake relaxed. It was something he was far too good at, it was simple, too soothing. It was different from all the seemingly endless adventuring that would take place each day, possibly a break from it all. So when somebody messed up on that viola, oh boy, when somebody did a bad job of playing it, that's when Jake went bonkers.
"Listen Finn, the white hairs are the bow hairs, ok? Not the unicorn hairs! And it's C.G.D.A in that order, dude."
The thing about the viola, was that you had to do it justice. It wasn't like a sword that you could dull out and sharpen over and over again. It was something far too precious for that. But Finn, well, he was always going on about how Jake was a little too crazy about the "silly instrument". And all Jake could tell him? Playing it was a work of art in itself. Hard to handle, even more difficult to create.
"See man, if you wanna impress Bubblegum, you gotta become a musician! It's not easy, but I'll help you out."
Jake knew he was doing some real good here. Teaching his best bud how to play the viola in a way that didn't totally suck? Now that itself was a true accomplishment. But he's gotta be honest too, Finn needed all the girl help he could get.
"I'm the ladies' man, remember?"
Jake knew Finn always relied on him for his internal troubles. He was okay with that, after all, it was the least he could do for having such a broseph stick by his side. But when Jake thought about it, he realised that he was nowhere near as brave as Finn. Nor as valiant. He was a dog, he was a best friend, but what if he was pretending to be something he wasn't? What if he wasn't a hero?
"This viola's everything, Finn."
The thoughts were taunting. They were rude, they were mean, but they were there.
"But you're a little more."
Still, Finn is everything to Jake, and if the boy told him that he was hero, well doggonit, he was a hero. Bad thoughts can't catch up to Jake the Hero long enough to change his mind. Rest assured, rest assured.
They'll still be playing the viola.
