"See, that's why you go to dress. You get to see things that will never make it live." -- Tina Fey, SNL Dress, 05/07/05
Yes, you read that correctly: I WENT TO DRESS. And oh my god, it was the most amazing, wonderful, incredible thing I have EVER done in my entire LIFE. If you ever go to see SNL, go to dress. Seriously. I'll tell you why later...because before we can get to "the good stuff", we have to get through the 6 hour wait.
So we didn't end up leaving until 8:30pm, because my dad had to work and I wasn't packed. We got there at 1am. About 25 people were already waiting. It was raining, and freezing, but luckily we had chairs with umbrellas to keep us safe from the rain.
But I didn't hang out by the chair. I started walking around, and walked up to a group that was hanging out under the NBC awning. Now, here's where it gets weird: I asked to join them. I started talking to them. Later I went to McDonalds with them, and still later I started just generally hanging out with some people and wandering around NYC with them while waiting for 7am to roll around.
I met
fallon_ash, who has read some of my fic. That was totally trippy, but also totally AWESOME because she's really cool, and we had little inside gossipy things to talk about in relation to WU. XD Plus, she (and her friend) used to be on the Simply Annabeth forums! I practically died when she told me. Hey, Jen, do you remember what my username was? 'Cuz I forget.
I also met Brandi, who recieved a handwritten thank you note in the mail from Tina after giving her a beautiful scrapbook a few weeks ago. How sweet is she? (Both of them!) Also, report goes that Tina and Amy are the sweetest cast members. Hah! I always knew I had good taste.
At 7am, we recieved our standby tickets. My dad and I were 14 & 15. Then we headed over to our friend's apartment on the west side to get some sleep. We slept for about 3 hours, then got up to go to lunch.
While at lunch, we saw Anna Paquin and some guy from the OC eating lunch together! My first real celebrity sighting! And apparently they're dating, 'cuz the other people at the table saw them kissing when they left. Then I split one of NY's best cookies with my dad. They aren't kidding when they call 'em NY's best cookies.
After that we went to meet up with
trancer. My dad went to the Nomadic museum while Rue and I wandered around on 2nd Ave. It was awesome. We got some hot chocolate, too, and it was crazy good. Oh, and I saw some other mildly famous guy, but I have NO IDEA who he is. I just recognized him.
We left Rue (and she apparently almost died, but didn't actually die) to go wait in line for standby. Let me just tell you, that should really be considered a form of torture. You have to wait for the normal ticket people to go in, then they line you up again to wait (a long time) for a count...
And THEN they send the first 15 people through security, with "no guarantee" that they'll get in. Then you have to wait, and wait, and wait, right in front of the elevators, until they get the final count.
And then THEY SEND YOU UPSTAIRS TO THE STUDIO. We had upper level, EXACTLY center seats. Seriously, they're the best seats you can have because you're right in front of Weekend Update. I just about had a conniption fit when they brought out the set.
Oh my god. It's amazing this show can even happen. There is SO much going on between commercial breaks and between sketches. It's not even SANE. There was this one poor woman who had to drag Johnny Knoxville off after every sketch. And when I say drag, I mean drag. She just yanked him out of there.
But it was awesome because you get to see everything behind the scenes. Plus, when Amy and Tina come out for WU, they start waving and smiling at the audience. I'm pretty damn sure Amy noticed me, if only because I didn't stop waving hysterically and screaming and laughing every time she opened her mouth. Tina might have seen me too, actually, 'cuz I was pretty much going nuts.
And now, the moment you've all been waiting for. Why should you go to dress? Because if you don't go to dress, you miss stuff like this:
EvyCarnahan5: It was so hilarious. Amy started doing this thing where she was like TINA ADMIT THAT YOU LOVE ME and Tina was like, Uhh, no. Scene! And Amy would be like, No! Not scene! Not until you admit that you think I'm sexy! And Tina would be like, Uh, can we not do this, Amy? Kthnx. Scene. And then Amy would be like NO again, and they did this about 5 times before Amy finally says, I WON'T STOP UNTIL YOU SAY THAT YOU'LL STAY WITH ME FOREVER AND MAKE BABIES WITH ME! And Tina was like, Okay, FINE. And then they both went, Scene!
fowl the second: XD!!
EvyCarnahan5: And then Tina says, "See, that's why you go to dress. You get to see things that never make it to live."
fowl the second: So awesome. X3
EvyCarnahan5: And then Tina had this strand of hair that kept falling in her face the entire time, and whenever the camera was on Amy she kept trying to fix it. Eventually she had to comment on it because it wasn't staying, and Amy leans over and holds it out of Tina's face while she's talking. And then Amy gives up, I guess, and Tina holds it up herself while she's talking, and to make Tina feel better, Amy is sitting there rubbing her hair into this big tangled mess, and EVERYONE is cracking up.
The first thing made my life. I was like, SOMEONE UP THERE LOVES ME! XD XD XD So, so, so amused. I was totally hyperventillating.
But I think the moment that Amy might have noticed me was while she was doing the Angelina Jolie thing. Because honestly, I love Amy the most when she's threatening to beat people up. What is her beef with Jolie, anyway?
Anyway, the point is that I was cracking up and cheering for her, and there was this moment when she paused and made a comment, I think. She may have even looked up in my direction...but she definitely noticed that someone was REALLY enthused. XD
But WU was definitely the highlight. The real downside of the trip was that we thought the cast would come out after dress, but they only come out after live...and my dad wasn't willing to wait outside at 1am. I tried to stay with Brandi and them, but my dad wouldn't allow it. So I didn't get to meet anyone.
I just hope they took lots of pictures for me and maybe mentioned me to Tina and Amy. *fingers crossed* Although if they didn't, I can't blame them; I would probably forget if you put me in front of Tina and Amy.
So the rest of the night was sort of miserable, and some stuff was said that shouldn't be repeated, and lots of bad feelings were involved. My dad and I were NOT getting along.
I did watch the live show on TV, and it's amazing how much changes. Seriously. The show itself was better live, but I think the interactions are better during dress.
One interesting thing, for those who watched last night: For the opening sketch during dress, Paula Abdul played herself. Amy was nowhere to be seen. I have no idea why it changed, but I was really surprised to see Amy. I was also surprised to see Amy so much on the show last night, because she didn't show up until 45-60 minutes into the show during dress. I was going absolutely crazy.
Also? New guy is from Fairfax. Adorable. I love him. Will and Seth are my heroes, and I want their babies.
And speaking of babies...Tina definitely has a baby bump. So, so, so cute. I was like, AWW, Tina is preggers! You can't see it during WU, but when she was waiting for her cue in the News sketch, she had her arms crossed and her belly was sticking out a little. It's a baby!Fey.
So, that was my trip (I would tell you about today, but it was pretty much uneventful). I have never done anything so amazing in my life. Next year I plan to go up there as often as possible. Standing in line, despite the freezing cold, was SO much fun. I met a lot of great people. Next year I'll be sure to stand outside to meet Amy (but no Tina, *sob*), and get myself a great picture with her.
Besides, I still have to give her the t-shirts I'm going to make. One for her, and one for Tina. I guess she'll just have to pass that one on.
Oh! My dad and I worked on my sketch ideas on the way home. If I can figure out how, I'm going to submit them to Lorne in the hopes that he'll like them. I figure, why not? The worst thing that will happen is that he'll never respond. The best? Well, I don't even want to think about that right now.
I love SNL. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, you've both changed my life. I will find a way to tell that to you both someday. But for now, I'll just be happy with the amazing time I had at SNL.
