On Brazilian TV, the most popular form of entertainment are soap operas (telenovelas). Our soap operas are famous not only in Brazil but all over the world. They are exported to places like Portugal, Russia and Angola.
As a Brazilian, every now and then I get caught up with one. Last year, I went crazy with "A Favorita", written by João Emanuel Carneiro, and broadcast at Rede Globo. It was well made, had good character development, lots of mystery and lots of taboo discussions (well, at least for our country, anyway). The main story was about two friends who, at adulthood, became rivals. And, at first, you don't know who of them is the villain.
Although the main story was pretty exciting, my favorite storyline was about Catarina (Lilia Cabral) and Stela (Paula Burlamaqui). Catarina lived in a small town, surrounded by family. She had pretty low self-esteem and an abusive husband. Life sucked for her, until she met Stela, an independent woman who opened a restaurant in front of her house. They became friends and Stela offered Catarina a job as her assistant. Stela is a lesbian and soon, falls for Catarina.
In the first draft, Catarina was supposed to reciprocate the love for Stela. But as the story goes on, the author decided to focus on a discussion about friendship: one being straight and the other, a lesbian. That kind of took the fun out of the story, because Stela really falls in love with Catarina. When Catarina ends her marriage and start dating another man, Stela decides to move out of the town, so Catarina would not feel "confused" about her love. Also, so she would not suffer from Catarina's future marriage to a man. Catarina was against Stela's departure.
In the very end, though, Catarina splits her relationship and decides to travel with Stela to Buenos Aires. And they leave town together. If you read the subtext, Catarina leaves the town to be able to start a relationship with Stela.
This story have lots and lots of subtext. I might talk about them later.
So, the point for all this yada yada is that I made fanvideos about them. Here are some. Enjoy!
