Most Underrated Indie Record of 2003:
Elefant - Sunlight Makes Me Paranoid This record, in my opinion, is an over-looked gem. It's a really cool Brit-Poppy kind of deal, but it's not British. It's American. And it definitely takes a lot cues from 80s New Wave music. It kind of reminds of The Cure, sort of. If you are using a file-sharing doo-hickey to check this out, some suggested tracks are the title track, "Tonight Let's Dance," and "Make Up." Super-fun indie pop goodness. Sparkle, sparkle.

Most Irritating Indie Record of 2003:
The Baptist Generals - No Silver/No Gold This record is an absolute abomination. These guys give tape hiss a bad name. I want to cut off their heads and stuff them in my old Transformers lunchbox from grade school. Do *NOT* pay any attention to the indie rock reviewers who make comparisons between these guys and creative, talented artists like Will Oldham. The big difference between The Baptist Generals and Will Oldham is that first of all, Will Oldham doesn't suck, and furthermore, he doesn't suck so bad that I would rather listen to Linkin Park or The Insane Clown Posse instead. These people frighten me. And not frighten as in when I was 6 years old staying up late watching Nightmare on Elm Street for the first time ever. I mean they frighten me in much the same way my Captain Beefheart records scare my roommate's fiancee. I remember the horrible face she made whe she walked in and heard "My Human Gets Me Blues" blasting out of my stereo speakers. Although I wasn't holding a mirror at the time, I'm sure that's probably what my face looked like when I first heard the Baptist Generals. God damn I hate this record.
