Ah, you know what...'ecchi' is a little hard to explain. It's a simple thing and yet...choosing the right word as a translation...often it seems to be used in place of 'perverted', but I think when used as a genre tag, the best translation would be...smutty, maybe. But supposedly it's not 'hardcore', it's a little lighter. In theory, I think. (In other words, it's not outright porn, it just has plenty of sexual situations included in the story. That's my impression.)
Anyway, I usually filter those ones out before I start looking through the directory to find something to read. (I avoid them but I have actually read a little of a few with that tag and some are so funny you might die laughing if you actually tried to read it through. I remember one called 'Momoiro Heaven' that was...well, I'm not sure you'd want to know, but it was SO funny that it was hard to think of it as smutty rather than as just risque ridiculous comedy. But I didn't read the entire thing so who knows how that all ended up. But I did literally cry from laughing so hard. I think I even wheezed several times, and maybe even snorted by accident.)
Most of the time, though, they're just a bit icky, though that's in my opinion, and I'm rather conservative by nature. Well, not that I've read enough to be fair, maybe, but that's my feelings on the subject and I don't really want to read a load of ecchi stuff to see if I'm misjudging the genre. (I don't think I am, though.)
