Summary: The time had come. He was ready.

The time had come. The time for him to step up on the court and play like he never did before.

He hissed as he checked his shoelaces once again. He had come far.

In a second that felt like an hour, Kaidoh remembered every single thing that had brought him there. It all started when he joined the tennis team, in middle school. Little did he know, back then, where that would bring him. There, he had met Momoshiro, his friend and his rival. They might not have liked eachother much, but Momo played a big part on turning Kaidoh into what he was now.

His second year of middle school was unforgettable, though. Everything that had happened, it was just overwhelming to think about. That match against Kamio that made him show his Boomerang Snake for the first time. He knew he wouldn't have come this far without that move. And, of course, he only came that far because he perfected it. He owed that to Inui.

Inui. He had always been there for him. Helping him train, perfecting his techniques, setting up a training schedule for him... He respected Inui more than anyone then, even more than he respected Tezuka. And Inui wasn't scared of him like most of the others. He'd protect him no matter what, and Kaidoh knew that.

That's why he had knocked on Inui's door that one night, under the pouring rain, after having a fight with his parents over a stupid reason. It was late, he knew that, but he also knew that Inui's parents were out of town that night, and that the dataman would certainly be working on his data for the upcoming tournament.

Though it was a very surprised Inui that came to the door, and he even yelled at him for being outside and completely wet. But Kaidoh had ignored him and had thrown himself into his arms. Inui had held him back. The older boy didn't notice, because the viper's face was already soaked in rain, but he had cried in his arms because he was so happy.

Then the nationals came, and Kaidoh was genuinely scared, for the first time in a long time, when he saw Inui falling helplessly right by his side, while he couldn't do anything about it. His heart had skipped a beat, his eyes had widened, and his world completely stopped. He didn't even register the blood-freezing scream that escaped his lips. His mind was completely blank when he escorted Inui to the hospital, and he sighed in relief when the doctor told him he'd be okay. Still, he didn't leave Inui's side for a single second.

His mind fast forwarded a few years, to a night he spent with Inui, on the street tennis courts. It was their 8th year anniversary, and after the movie and fancy dinner, Inui took him there, supposedly, for a match. Kaidoh was commenting that he didn't have his racket with him, and neither did Inui, when the older man kneeled before him and pulled out a small box from his pocket.

"Kaidoh Kaoru, will you marry me?"

He'd never forget that moment. It had been almost four years ago, but he still remembered exactly what he felt, and exactly how nice Inui smelled, and exactly where he had stood, staring at Inui in shock.

They announced their engagement at Kawamura's restaurant, when all the former Seigaku regulars were gathered to celebrate Oishi and Kikumaru's sixth month wedding anniversary. They all looked so happy...

Even now, he didn't believe so many good things had happened to him. Even though he had been set aside by everyone else ever since his teenage years, he still had Inui and his friends. He must've done something really good, he thought, when he was a child or in some past life to deserve such a perfect life. Now he could truly smile and say he was happy.

Kaidoh stepped on the court, as did the other man, and he heard his fans cheer for him.

The time had come. He was ready.

He shook the other man's hand firmly, and both of them smirked before turning around to stand on each side of the court while the voice announced: "The US Open men's singles finals will now begin: Ryoma Echizen vs. Kaoru Kaidoh."
