**********************

Last night i saw Murder by Death w/ Ha Ha Tonka and Linfinity at the Middle East Downstairs. It was a really awesome show. i met up with an acquaintance/friend from the lizard lounge who had told me that both the opening bands sucked and he and his friends were determined to not like the openers no matter what- booing and talking down to the band. good thing they're all big guys and funny. I opted to give the bands a chance.
Linfinity was pretty good actually. Having just seen DeVotchKa the night before, i drew some parallels between them: the high-pitched singer, awesome violin and mandolin and nice heavy bass. great energy and a good mix of songs- some slow and a couple that were edging on punk and some other in-between songs. it was a solid set.
Ha Ha Tonka: my buddied booed them the whole fucking time and while they weren't the best, they weren't boo-worthy. they did a couple gorgeous a capella songs, and otherwise had a very consistent sound. Cover of Black Betty had me cracking up because all i could think of was the video played on Tosh.0 (whoooa black betty *amburlance* black betty *amburlance*) the lead singer needed some facial hair- he as a man alone on stage without it.
Murder by Death: didn't put me to sleep this time, thankfully. in fact, it was quite the opposite. they seemed to have a lot more gusto this time (and i was a lot more drunk). All of the new songs are fucking amazing, so i quickly bought the new album, Good Morning, Magpie, and a sweet t-shirt. That Johnny Cash voice is just so fucking sexy.

EARLIER THAT DAY

Frightened Rabbit, the Scottish indie folk band was in live at WERS. They played an awesome acoustic set and didn't play any of their singles, which i liked. it was all "radio new" material. They had a great sense of humor and the lady ga ga shirt was priceless. When talking about his new album he was saying that people were upset with the album being more upbeat and that everyone liked him better when he was miserable. He was glad to be happy again, but what to do about the fans, lol.

THE NIGHT BEFORE

I was at the House of Blues to see the sold out performance of Gogol Bordello w/ DeVotchKa and Jesse Malin & The St. Marks Social! saw a friend of mine i hadn't seen in about a year, Angie was there with a friend of hers and because Rodney had mistakenly picked up a shift at work i gave the extra ticket to a very excited Max Lysobe.

Jesse Malin & The St. Marks Social: what can i say that isn't too mean? um, they were a fucking joke. How they got on this tour I don't understand. They had the vibe of a small hole-in-the-wall bar where nobody goes. They seemed very out of touch with todays rock 'n' roll, and while they dressed the part and had the energy of a talented rock band, they were not even close on the sound. Also, ending a set with a Clash cover instead of a song you wrote is sad. you don't have a song in your repertoire that you could knock us out with? oh wait, no, no you don't.

DeVotchKa: so amazing. Best use of theromin since i saw Les Claypool, and i just love big-ass tubas. my heart split in half and jumped out of my chest and windmill kicked some douche bag behind me when he honestly and seriously asked his friends "what's that weird lookin' guitar?" pointing at the standing bass. When told it was a bass he asked, "what's the difference between that and a regular bass?" SLAP SLAP SLAP SLAP. Anyway, i digress. They had fucking acrobats!!! you know those performers who wrap themselves up in the the double curtains that hang from the ceiling? well there were two of those.

like this! two ladies doing this!!! incredibly cool!
they rocked the eff out. Bravo!

Gogol Bordello: never disappointed. twice now i've walked out of their show drenched in wine and i wouldn't have it any other way. they played for probably about an hour and a half if not more. the new shit is good and the old shit is best. the energy and stamina of this band is so amazing, and they are so so so much better live, i think. love me some GB.
