I put this already on my MySpace.com site but I am really venting and wanted to put it all out there. Sorry it has been so long since I have written, I hope you all haven't forgotten me...
Ok, well, I normally wouldn't post this but I am really irritated. I came to this job here because it would be a big change and change is often the greatest challenge to becoming a better person.
Aside from feeling too old anymore to keep up with things, I came to this place because I was under the belief that change and risk were integral to success. What I came to understand is that they are stagnant as a whole.
The fact that they do not celebrate MLK day except for a 3 hour break during classes and then to use the excuse that they couldn't have the staff on campus and plan good events for the rememberance of MLK. I am sorry, but that is pure and utter bovine feces if you ask me.
The truth is that the day itself is the symbol, the holiday is the rememberance in many cases. Yes, it is also a time to celebrate and contemplate the victories that have happened in the past. The reality though is that some people take some time to themselves, spend time with friends, attend to personal hobbies, etc.... Why does MLK day have to be an entire day spent going to events and activities? The answer is that it doesn't.
Everyone reflects in their own way but the holiday itself and having the day off is a symbol of the struggle through adversity for many people out there. This act alone has proven to me that my employer talk about diversity but does not apply this to social justice. Where is the action?
I wish I would have known this before I accepted the position. I had to write something because it is truly sticking in my craw and I feel a need to vent. This is just one more example of the fact that academic superiority does not equal ethical or social evolution.
This place doesn't have students protesting or disagreeing very often. It is almost like they are so busy with school work that they forget that they are a part of a giant world and that they can fix it starting right here. The students have values, I know they do, I work with them every day.
It is time to rock the boat, it needs to be rocked, and it should be rocked because old ideas, values, traditions and beliefs sometimes need to go into the depths of the ocean never to be heard from again. Peace out!
Lots of love to Nate Dogg and some others for always making me believe that things will get better and that sometimes you are in a place for a reason.
I always think that I am exactly where I need to be right at the moment that I am there. Let us hope that this is the case here and then maybe this will finally lead to the transormation that I have been seeking.
