Despite everything, Ed had a nightly run-on-the-beach-in-the-sand-barefoot training to attend to tonight, and if anything the added rocks being hurled about were looked upon by his mentor as a 'great idea for added assistance.'

Ren would probably quickly notice that the rocks had a strange tendency to fly in a specific direction... and Ed was quickly getting tired of having to dodge them all.

I'm going to die here... aren't I..?

To be honest, Ren had only been paying attention to the boulders themselves. She didn't notice Ed ducking and dodging until she had gone to pick up another target... and stopped dead the second she saw him.

"F-Finklestein-san? Oh, my gosh! A-Are you okay!? W-What are you even doing here?" To the observant ear, she sounded surprised, scared, concerned, and just a little annoyed all at once.

He was covered with scrapes and bruises from near misses. "S... sorry if I'm interrupting... I can go, if you want... eheh..."

"O-Oh, my gosh! You're hurt!" The way she reacted, you think she'd broken his arms in ten different places instead of seeing that many bruises among them. "You... Oh, gosh... You don't have to go, but... We should g-get you fixed up...! I'm really sorry..."

"I'm okay... really!" he replied quickly, waving a hand in a 'don't you worry about it!' way. "It's just... you're the last person I'd have expected out here in the middle of the night. Shouldn't you and Amado be... celebrating or something?"

He wasn't very good at the whole boyfriend/girlfriend thing, but he thought that was what you were supposed to do.

For a moment, Ren looked as if she had been punched in the stomach. She had never been good at hiding her feelings- Now was no exception as she tried to smile at the boy. "I... I don't think Amado-san is f-feeling very well right now, s-so... no. No... we're not."

"...Hey... Ren... Uhh..." Ed looked around as though scared of something before jogging in place again. "If you want to, we can run together and you can tell me what's going on. I know we don't know each other too well..." (He was pretty much the only kid who hadn't been to the infirmary all year, after all) "But I want to help! Really! 'Cause... I don't want anybody to be sad or lonely..."

"Okay then! Let's go! I'm supposed to do a lap around the island! I'm about... one mile into it!"

He seemed energetic for someone who'd just run a mile barefoot in the sand. "...S-so uh... how's... life?"

He's supposed to run around... the whole island? In his bare feet!? She wanted to inquire, but she'd been asked a question first, so... "It's... It's okay, I guess... H-How about you? You're... training now?"

"Yeah, well..." He grinned sheepishly as he continued running. "I uh... had a bit of an eye-opener or two over the summer. And then my cousin ended up staying with me... and he's helping me train. Kinda. I have to get stronger... strong enough to keep up with you guys again."

"I'm sure you'll be able to do it!" Ren said enthusiastically, pumping a fist into the air. "Or at least, uhm, just be able to do your best! Eheheh... It seems like everyone is training harder this year..." She paused for a moment, simply jogging. "I'm a little worried that... some are doing it too much..."

"...Oh... I... I see... I'm training hard... so hard that there's not a lot of time for other stuff... but..." he thinks. "I dunno... there's a huge obstacle in front of me... and it's one I know I can't beat like I am now. So I... I have to train harder and harder until nobody can stop me... especially not her! I have to... make everything right again. That's my purpose! Y'know?"

"She's, uhm, just interning, though, r-right?" She had, of course, kept up his pace, even though the pause had sort of thrown them off time. "I mean... she's... still with you in spirit..." She didn't really know a lot about Ed and Mylene, but she'd heard about Lila and her visit, and knew at least that much.
