Change "almost" in my previous to "very minor". Or at least that what it felt like last night and today.
First off, what the hell happened to me, anyways?
I was playing softball with my brother's team as always on Sunday. Because it had rained pretty good the night before, our 9:00 Sunday game yielded a pretty wet field, and more importantly... and slippery home plate.
In softball, there is this extra rubber part they put at the bottom of the plate so that the base is longer. This is because in softball, or at least in the type we play, a strike is called when the ball HITS the plate, not like in baseball where it has to sail over.
Well, because of a wet field, even that rubber part was slipping.
So, I hit a single and was on first base, all nice and well. My brother then came up to bat. He hit a triple, and he is freaking fast, so I had to motor my way across all the bases as fast as I possibly could. So rounding 3rd, I running full blast heading for home. Since I have my back to the play, I keep going fast until I'm just a step away from home.
I come to the base and step on it... and slip. The plate is still very wet. Why they have not dried it is beyond me. As I step on it, my foot slides, not allowing it to bend to keep me from falling. I quickly start to fall, but somehow stay on my feet.
Now, keep in mind, the distance from the plate to the back walls isn't too far, so I still have the same speed I rounded 3rd with, heading for a wall.
Still trying to get control, I fight to not fall. However, with the wall closing in fast, I decide to just take the fall. But it's too late for even that now. I spin around so my back takes a good part of the wall, but with my back goes the back of my head, hitting the wall about as fast as I can run, which is pretty fast.
I lied there for a couple of seconds, trying to shake off the sudden dizziness I had. I heard my girlfriend and my mom cry out when I had intially hit. People from both benches swarmed me, asking if I was ok. I said I was, and after laying for a little bit, I got up off my own power.
I started toward the bench and my brother, who was behind me (after he saw I hit and time out was called, he came over) said that I was walking a very wobbly line towards out bench. Even my mom and g/f saw my awkward walking. It's funny though, I felt I was walking perfectly normal at the time, but I guess I was just disoriented.
I went outside to the spectator stands and sat there with my mom and g/f for a while. I just needed to rest. I actually felt like sleeping right there. But as anyone who has had a concussion knows, sleeping is about the worse thing you could do if you do have a concussion. So my mom keeps talking to me trying to keep me awake.
After a while, I get up and walk around. I feel ok, all the stun and dizzy of it all is over... or is it?
More of the concussion update still to come in later posts.
Next up: How I felt that night and the next morning.
