10 GOOD THINGS

Oct 01, 2007 12:20

In which your humble narrator starts off the week and the month with 10 GOOD THINGS
01.) Those people important to me are safe, healthy and not in the custody of the state. I have an income, a roof over my head, and sustenance. For these basic items, which should never be taken for granted, I remind myself to be grateful. After all, things could always be much worse.

02.) I turned 42 on Tuesday (Yes, I am old.) and went out of a quiet hibachi and sushi dinner with Oz and the Evil Twin. Unfortunately I received no epiphanies or other sudden bursts of knowledge or inspiration. This is not a big surprise. I know what I need to be doing, I just need to stop making excuses and start making progress.

03.) Meanwhile, down in the Design Dungeon, I managed to pull the first big festival book together and get it ready for print in record time without bludgeoning the "help" they provided for me...

04.) ...then took this last weekend off to recover. It was my first full weekend off in a while. That felt good.

05.) Saturday was an all day crawl with the Evil Twin and Oz through the three Half-Priced Books in Indy after a tasty Reuben at Shapiro's for lunch. Best score was a paperback copy of Jerry Pournelle and Larry Niven's Inferno. I also picked up two more How To Draw Manga books.

06.) Met with the Germans, the Medzors, the Ridgerunner and a few special guests for dinner at Buca Di Beppo in Greenwood. We even scored the extra-special Pope Room, complete with Roto-Pope centerpiece. Food was very good, the company even more enjoyable. A great ending for my displaced birthday. Thanks to all for the good wishes and the gifts.

07.) Sunday, Oz ran a D&D session so Medzor and I could actually get to play together. (Normally, one of us is the DM.) What with the character creation and all, it was a short session but still a good time. Now that we all have characters I'm hoping he'll agree to a spot in the rotation so it will be a more common thing.

08.) Brett Favre broke two records yesterday but more importantly the Packers are 4-0.

09.) Friday night I took the time to park myself on the truck's tailgate and drink a beer while looking at the stars and listening to the crickets and the wind. It was peaceful and relaxing. I must carve out more of that idle time for myself in the future.

10.) Today is payday.

11.) - the return of the HAIKU NO SEN!
The lovely drive in this morning inspired me to actually return to the daily haiku practice.

HAIKU NO SEN-Z: 10-01-07
Susurrus
changing leaves whisper
caressed by gentle cool wind
heat of summer breaks

Most powerful is he who has himself in his own power.- Seneca
