Prologue here

With the help of the Doctor, a team of UNIT soldiers found the Rani’s warehouse and began removing thousands of dummies that still hung from hooks in the ceiling. Having previously seen alien technology, nothing in the warehouse surprised the UNIT soldiers. What was of interest to the Doctor was the Nestene sphere, imprisoned in the electrical field.

‘Well my little friend, we meet again.’ The Doctor said as he hovered over the field, probing it with the sonic screwdriver. ‘Now we’re all friends here so I’m going to let you go… as long as you promise me you’ll never come back here again. Tell the Nestene Consciousness that this planet is out of bounds. It’s been here three times before and met with strong opposition so why bother?’

The sphere glowed as if in compliance, in a language only the Doctor seemed to understand. Waving the sonic screwdriver over the electrical field it sparked once then went out. Immediately, free from its energy bonds, the Nestene sphere left the cradle and flew out of the warehouse.

The Doctor followed it at a run, hoping that his gamble would pay off. If he was wrong the Autons could begin again without the Rani controlling them. Looking up at the sky the Doctor smiled. ‘Go on you beauty, go tell the rest of you that Earth is out of bounds!’ It was an empty victory, the doctor knew. The Rani was still out there and she would be back. He could beat her fifty times in a row, but he could only lose once.

Heading towards the parked SUV, the Doctor was brought back to reality at the sight of Louise Ruth smiling and laughing with Jack and Ianto. Torchwood four had been found and they’d asked Jack to head it up. Hearing that it was staffed by five women Jack jumped at the chance. Ianto had decided to follow, going everywhere Jack goes with no questions asked, it seemed. But what the Doctor wanted to know was what Louise Ruth would do.

He’d overheard a conversation between Ianto, Jack and Louise Ruth and wasn’t surprised to hear that she’d been offered a position in Torchwood 4. Jokingly she’d said that she could never work in Newcastle… but the Doctor knew the power of Jack’s persuasive nature.

‘Hi Doc… you manage to sort things out?’ Jack asked as the Doctor replaced his sonic screwdriver. Nodding he smiled,

‘And wasn’t I brilliant.’ Louise Ruth put her arms around the Doctor and gave him a hug.

‘Yes Doctor, you were exceptional.’ The Doctor’s smile grew larger and he hugged her back.

‘There’s just one thing Doctor,’ the Brigadier joined them, looking weary after battling Autons for 48 hours straight, without any sleep. Benton followed, still holding his bruised and cracked ribs.

Turning the Doctor released Louise Ruth to confront the Brigadier. He knew that the Brigadier had wanted to blow up the Nestene sphere, but the Doctor wouldn’t let him.

‘Go on Brigadier, fire away… so to speak,’ he quickly added as he gazed at the armoured vehicles that surrounded them.

‘Why the Boeing 737, I mean, this all started with flight 101 from Cyprus. The Rani must have been on board with a number of aliens… why couldn’t she have just used her TARDIS and no one would have been the wiser?’ The Doctor thought about this for a moment before answering.

‘The reason she used flight 101 was to transport the Nestene sphere. The TARDIS’ time field would have disrupted its electronic holding pen and it would have been able to break free. It was the only way she could get it into the country. The rest, as Louise Ruth pointed out, was a ruse to get the sphere near enough to the Auton warehouse and the Winter Gardens.’

The Brigadier nodded, satisfied that all had been done that could have been done. Turning he waved his swagger stick and the nearest armoured transport fired up its diesel engines.

‘Well good luck Doctor… I’m sure we’ll see each other again. Do forgive me if I don’t look forward to the occasion.’ The Doctor nodded, and waving watched the Brigadier help Benton aboard the troop carrier and drive off in a cloud of black diesel fumes.

Turning back towards Louise Ruth, a look of sadness crossed his face and a feeling of impending loneliness filled him. It was a feeling he was far too familiar with of late. He didn’t own the right to loneliness, he knew. Jack and Ianto had lost friends in the worst of circumstances, fighting for the human race. Because Jack had lived longer he had lost more and lived with the knowledge that everyone he loves will die eventually, and he’ll be there when they do.

Despite that it was only the tip of the iceberg for him. He’d lived many times and lost entire civilisations, not just people, and the burden hung heavily on him. He remembered the first time he’d met Louise Ruth he had just left the funeral of a previous companion, one that had died of old age, something he knew he was doomed to repeat many times in the future. He sometimes stopped himself from looking at people and wondering if he could love them, only enough to be able to visit their funerals and not feel too bad about it. Steeling himself for the inevitable, the Doctor looked into Louise Ruth’s eyes and patiently waited.

‘The way I look at it Doctor…’ she thought for a moment then launched into her speech, one she’d practiced for the last few hours. ‘Is… Cyprus.’

‘What…?’ the Doctor was taken aback, a look of incomprehension showing on his face.

‘Cyprus… flight 101. Doctor, get with the program.’ Turning to Jack she smiled. ‘It’s as if one of us is on FM and the other’s on AM.’ Turning back to face the Doctor she noticed his smile had returned. ‘If the Rani arrived on flight 101 from Cyprus then guess where I think she’ll head back to?’

‘Brilliant!’ the Doctor almost shouted as he gave Louise Ruth a hug. ‘But it would have to be somewhere quiet that wouldn’t attract anyone’s attention.’ It was Jack’s turn to smile.

‘How about the "ghost city" of Varosha as a place to hide? It’s a suburb of Famagusta, surrounded with barbed wire.’ Jack held out his arms as if waiting for the Doctor to hug him, but knew it would never happen.

‘That’s brilliant Jack! Well, can’t stop, must dash.’ The Doctor added looking around for his TARDIS, then realising that it was still in the time exhibition back in the Winter Gardens. Normally he would have shot Jack’s idea down but this time it sounded reasonable.

Then he paused and looked curiously at Jack, ‘Wait a minute… how do you know about this place… Varosha. I smell a rat here somewhere.’ Jack looked a little sheepish, then raising his head, looked the Doctor square in the face.

‘Serious rift activity, we managed to convince the Turkish government to block off the city back in 1973 and no one had been allowed in there ever since.’

‘You’re not coming with us,’ the Doctor said, realising he had included Louise Ruth without thinking. Jack smiled and shrugged,

‘Torchwood Cyprus knows me quite well and will let me in and… anyone I bring with me.’ Jack held the rear door to the SUV open, inviting him inside. The Doctor shook his head,

‘I thought you had to sort out Torchwood 4.’ Jack’s smile increased at the thought of helping any women in need of him, but decided that working with someone that was older than him made him feel good.

‘They can get along without me for a while, anyway… we’re not due there for a few weeks yet… problems with the time dampening field… keeps shifting them to November 1961 for some reason.’ Resigned the Doctor shook his head then jumped into the rear seat of Jack’s SUV.

‘I know I’m going to regret this.’

The End

I’d love to know what people thought!
