Prologue - Old Soldiers

Walking back to the TARDIS was an anti climax for all concerned. No one shot at them. No one even spoke to them. Jack finally donned his coat at the insistence of Ianto, letting his body renew as he walked. The Doctor and the Brigadier walked on ahead admiring the flora and fauna as they talked.

‘Benton told me you think the Master is at the bottom of this? Up to his usual tricks.’ The Doctor shrugged,

‘Could have been. Someone transmatted from the top of the cathedral just before I entered the roof. Could have been the Master, or even the Rani, who knows. Whoever it was I think we’ll be seeing more of them in the future, or the past.’

Louise Ruth had seen Durham City so many times she d forgotten how beautiful it was. She tried to concentrate on helping Benton, who smiled back at her as she talked. Passing a blackened section of grass she wondered for a moment whether it had been the place where Tom had died or a Rutan.

The TARDIS stood in the clearing where they had left it, unmolested. It had taken her some time to see it but when she did she couldn’t understand how she had missed it in the first place. Next to the police call box stood an old man looking down at his hands mindfully. Without a word the Doctor ran up to him smiling.

‘Wilf?’ As Wilf lifted his head the Doctor noticed that he was old again, not the Tom Campbell they’d got used to over the past few hours. ‘Wilfred Mott, where… I mean how… We thought you were dead.’ Wilf smiled and shrugged. Ianto had stopped fussing over Jack by the time they reached the blue doors of the TARDIS with the rest of the surviving UNIT members.

‘The Rutan blast hit the wrist gun, knocked me out. When I came too there was no sign of it and I was back to being good old Wilfred Mott,’ Wilf said with a look of resignation on his face.

‘How is he old Doctor?’ Louise Ruth asked, glad to see that Wilf was still alive. The Doctor examined Wilf’s wrist.

‘Ahh, how ingenious,’ the Doctor said with a smile. ‘The Sontarans grow to full adult hood in a matter of hours. The probic vent in the back of their necks regulates their ageing process so they can stay adults all their lives, however long that may be.’
The Doctor looked into Wilf’s eyes and scanned him with his sonic screwdriver. ‘Remove the regulator and they return to the age they were before the regulator was fitted, in Wilf’s case, the age he was when he was cloned.’

The Doctor examined Jack’s bracelet and, scanning it with the sonic screwdriver, it parted and fell to the floor. Kicking it, the bracelet twisted in the air then exploded. Everyone turned to stare at Jack but nothing happened.

‘Why didn’t he get old Doctor?’ Benton asked.

‘Because he never was,’ shrugging he added, ‘and never will be. In fact if I’m right he was never a clone.’ The Doctor played the screwdriver over Ianto’s wrist before Jack could stop him.

‘No!’ he shouted as Ianto’s bracelet parted, just as the Doctor reached out and caught it. Turning he threw it towards the river. In a flash of light it exploded harmlessly into a thousand pieces. Ignoring the blast this time everyone stared at Ianto, who looked nervous under their gaze.

‘He’s all right,’ the Doctor said as everyone gave a sigh of relief. ‘He’s still the same age as he was when he was cloned.’ Ianto looked at Jack,

‘I am a clone?’ Jack smiled and, placing an arm around Ianto’s shoulder led him into the TARDIS.

‘Let me explain…’ were the last words Louise Ruth heard as they disappeared inside.

The Brigadier held his wrist out to the Doctor who smiled and shook his head. ‘If I remove the bracelet you’ll return to your original age… is that what you want… I mean Brigadier… just think of all the good you can do with what you know… all the civilisations you can discover… all the aliens you can kill.’ The Doctor added the last part with a deliberately exaggerated smile.

‘To answer your unspoken question, you wont live forever. You’re still eighty years old… just have a fit health body. With the bracelet in place you’ll stay that way until your mind decides it’s time to move on. Just as it would if you had a body that showed your actual age.’

The Brigadier nodded his understanding and, turning towards Benton, said in his usual authoritarian manor, ‘Come on Benton, don’t dilly, we have work to do.’

Benton followed, keeping his arm as far away from the Doctor as he could. As the Brigadier entered the TARDIS he was still amazed at how big it was inside. The Doctor turned back to Wilf,

‘I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.’ Wilf smiled,

‘It’s for the best. Who would look after Donna if I went off gallivanting around the place then? Anyway… can you drop me off in Chiswick… I think I’ve got more secrets to keep than usual’ The Doctor nodded then turning to follow Wilf into the TARDIS stopped abruptly and looked back at Louise Ruth.

‘Are you coming or do you want to stay?’ Louise thought for a moment then smiled.

‘Coming of course, as long as we’re not headed for Sunderland or Newcastle.’ The door closed behind them but the Doctor’s voice could still be heard.

‘Now Sunderland, there’s a place we could go, the 2012 Olympics, the Stadium of Light. I couldn’t go back to London to watch it anyway… something with the Olympic torch… best not to go into it.’

‘No Doctor; no, if we go there I want out right now!’ Their voices were drowned out by the reverberating noise of the TARDIS as it disappeared into the vastness of space and time.
