Michael Musto should rot from the inside.

I don't know if I hate the entirety of Out Magazine, or if I just hate Michael Musto. Either way, I am basically spitting mad about the new issue with the so-called 'Power 50', the list of the 50 most powerful gay men and women in America. So mad about it I haven't been able to articulate the anger for a good three days ( Read more... )

First of all, "honey", you're right about the Intelligencer mistake, that was my bad, I'll take that out.

But I don't think Cooper is being dishonest about his sexuality... he's never denied that he is gay, and certainly he's out in his nonprofessional life, and yes, we all know the story about his dad and his brother because he's talked about them to basically everyone with a couch, but if he would rather not discuss who he's shagging then I still maintain that that remains his decision. I don't believe he's attempting to hide the fact that he's gay in order to 'protect his career trajectory'-- with all the gossip about his man-about-town tendencies has any meat to it (as likely to be false as anything else) you'd certainly think he would try to stamp that sort of jabber out if he was trying to hide something. And we already have a gay dude on CNN, so its not like he would be the first.

And I disagree with you on the fact that no one is asking Coop to be a spokesperson, because that seems to be exactly what this sort of thing aims at, these power 50 or top 100 or big ten lists, those people are meant to be an inspiration or role model or what have you to the demographic at which they are pandered.

And if what you're saying about the other 48 is true, then why couldn't one or two of them be put on the cover? It's not so much that they are on the list itself, but that Out chose to put them on the cover not because they consider them the pinnacle of what a gay man or a gay woman can achieve (There Is No Ceiling! or whatever they tell you) but because they would sell the most magazines. It's not about gay pride here, its about controversy masked as progressivism, and I think it demeans us all.

And I am absolutely sure that Frank Barney is 'the gay guy in Congress' to someone.

Also, I wish I lived where you did, if race and religion is irrelevant there. I just don't understand why being gay has to be a major defining characteristic in the first place, or why it needs to be a part of the public discourse at all. If a person is gay, fine. Whatever. I still think it's their business. I don't need to know who is or who isn't. (Though truthfully, it might be nice to know a few more girls who are. And also their phone numbers.)

I'm not trying to defend hypocrisy here, and I'm not trying to say it's ok to mislead the public. But I don't think that is what Coop or Foster are trying to do by not publicly announcing whose romantic company they prefer.

And finally, I wish, I wish, in my heart of hearts, that with all this talk of honesty and openness, that you would have had the courtesy of not signing this anonymously.
