Lost Coast is located about 5 hours north of San-Francisco, one of a
few completely deserted areas along northern california coast. It is up
and down through the hills, some sand walking, it could be quite windy.
The area is savagely beautiful with lots of primitive and virgin
beaches, driftwood and rocks. It is not part of any state parks or
National parks but managed by BLM office, hence no permits are
required. Camp on the beach. Lots of tidal pools with star fish, sea
urchins, crabs, etc. Giant Redwood forests are near by.
Water is available from nearby creeks.
Lost Coast can be romantic but it can also be quite hostile if strong
winds persist and horizontal rain stings your face. If the weather
would be too rough one can always go inland to look for cover among
giant redwood forest. The best thing about redwood is to lay down on
the ground and look up at the crown of the tree 'miles' away in the sky.
Bears come down to the coast from the coastal hills. Bear proof
canisters are required nowadays. Amazing wild beaches, sunsets, tidal
pools with starfish, crabs, sea urchins. Lots of seals, pelicans, sea
gulls and sometimes even whales.
