Today it is raining. The mountains, normally obscene colors and achingly close-looking, are gone. The Strip is pale, veiled by gray sheets of rain in the distance, and the hotel /casinos’ features are masked, giving the vista the appearance of that of a real city. The landscape is so fascinating that I buy a burrito and park the car in a field and stare.
I can smell South Florida partially devoured by silver, yellow and purple. The sun comes through the clouds, a stubborn clear light, forcing everything into shallow perspective and shucking faces until they turn in the other direction, terrified. Then a full rainbow, stretching over the library and flinging itself onto the distant highway and landing strip. Airplanes fly under its arc. I prance on the pavement, call some people who are inside the library, and they come out and stare also.
Man, precipitation.
