CHARACTER NAME: Shirou Kamui
SERIES: X/1999 (manga-verse)
PERSONALITY:
Kamui is initially a sweet young boy, kind-hearted, but sometimes sad, as he is empathic to those around him. He also can be kind of innocent and naive, even going so far as to offer to get married to a childhood crush (Monou Kotori) of his, stating he would be the bride, instead of the husband. He deserves the comical attention though, as children so say the darnest things.
As he grows older, he also grows a spine- or maybe too much of one. From the naive child, he becomes a smart-mouthed, egotistical jackass with no regard for society, authority or others in general. He has a quick mouth, and an even quicker temper, snapping insults left and right, flaunting his talents and abilities, and generally very violent. He does whatever he wants, whenever he wants, and is secure in the thought that he is more powerful than anyone else around. This drastic change is due to the wish to keep Fuuma and Kotori from him and his inevitable fate.
His personality and disposition once again takes a drastic turn after the incident of his decision to join the Seals, the other "Kamui's" awakening and Kotori's murder. He becomes withdrawn, reclusive, and generally broken. The event of losing the final two people precious to him traumatized him enough to make him want to stay away from others, for fear of them dying as well.
For some time he keeps to himself, but careful encouragement from those around him and certain circumstances make him slowly come out of his shell again. His determination to still save Fuuma and protect the world is still shaky at best, but it's obvious he's trying to improve his attitude and recover from past trauma, calling up some old traits that seem to be helping him, such as his compassion and empathy for others, and his serious attitude when the situation arises.
A few of the bad things have come up as well, like his pride. He still believes that the whole world's fate is on his shoulders, and he cant allow others to interfere with that. It may come off as him taking responsibility for his actions, but couple his pride with his temper, and... well, you have a glimpse of the former Kamui. This pride also keeps him from realizing the single most important thing in his life- his true wish. He believes his true wish is to save Fuuma and return him to normal, but it's not. Fuuma and Subaru confirmed it themselves, and this is what is likely to get Kamui killed- only the realization of his true wish will save him from Fuuma, and allow him to fulfill his destiny as savior of the world.
In a tarot deck, his card is The Magician, which represents wisdom, and the ability to create something from one's own hands. This alludes to the duty Kamui takes on as Dragon of Heaven and savior of the world, and what he should have to do be able to do so. It reflects his inner ability to become a leader, as wisdom and creativity/determination are essential. These traits are still hidden within him, but they're slowly coming out as time passes.
TIMELINE: Volume 19 (aka 18.5); the beginning of the Final Battle
BACKGROUND:
Kamui is somewhat of a normal teenager. I say "somewhat", because he has certain abilities to set him apart from other sixteen-year-olds. His destiny is something that's never been heard of either.
At nine years old, his mother takes him and moves to Okinawa, leaving behind his best friend, Monou Fuuma, and his sister, Monou Kotori in Tokyo. For six years they stay there, Kamui learning about his powers (presumably from his mother) and just growing up as normally as he can. Tooru dies one day in a fire, though, and leaves instructions for her son to return to Tokyo, his birthplace, to fulfill his destiny.
There he finds Fuuma and Kotori again, but refuses to acknowledge them, and also some strange people who know his name. Again, he attempts to drive them away, but one persistent teenager pursues him until he's heavily injured and collapses at the site of his old house. Fuuma comes across him, picks him up, and takes him home to treat him.
During recovery, he's visited by a boy whom Fuuma had met on the streets, Arisugawa Sorata. Kamui doesn't take a liking to him (what else is new?) but he's persistent, and insists that Kamui should keep him around.
But then Fuuma's father dies, killed by an unknown person (who is actually a Dragon of Earth, and the sword passes on to Fuuma later in the series), and the holy sword, the Shinken that has been in their temple for six years is gone as well. Dying in Fuuma's arms, he tries to tell Fuuma of his impending fate, but fails, leaving his son confused, and his daughter more traumatized than ever before.
They then come across Kamui's aunt, later kidnapped, then escapes back to them, only to "birth" another Shinken by allowing her body to be ripped apart as the sword comes out of her. The three teens are picked up by the three heads of CLAMP Academy, a school rooted in mysteries, and connected, once again, to the end of the world. They claim they can hide the Shinken they hold until the "promised day" comes. The kids have hardly any choice in the matter, so they agree, and hear the whole story, and Kamui learns more about himself and his destiny than just being the one whom the world depends on.
It's 1999, and the world is dying slowly. Fourteen chosen people from across Japan know this (aside from a few independent individuals), and gather in Tokyo, forming two groups of seven, the Ten no Ryuu or Dragons of Heaven or Seven Seals who dedicate themselves to protecting the world from destruction, and the Chi no Ryuu or Dragons of Earth or Seven Angels who decide that it is too late for salvation, and strive to bring about the end so the earth can be born anew. In the beginning, the two factions are missing the key members, their leader, or the "Kamui". For the Seals, their "Kamui" means "the one who embodies god's majesty", while the Angels' "Kamui" is "the one seeks god's majesty"- giving more emphasis to the fact that both sides are fighting each other.
These two positions are open for Kamui to fulfill, and he must choose one side. He eventually sides with the Seals and become "the one who holds god's majesty" because he wants to protect Kotori and Fuuma. Things are not so simple though, as whatever side Kamui chooses, his twin star or shadow or other self will be forced take the enemy's. And guess who his twin star is? Yep, Fuuma. Because of Kamui's choice, Fuuma becomes "Kamui"- the dark one.
What did Fuuma do once he had gained his position and received his new name? Kill his sister Kotori first and foremost as a sacrifice, supposedly to show the earth that judgement has come, and to alert his Dragons to assemble. He moves to kill Kamui next, but is stopped by someone who possesses Kotori's corpse. He realizes that this person is to be one of his Dragons, and seeks him out. With Kakyou the dreamgazer in his arms, he meets the rest of his Dragons of Earth in City Hall, and applies himself as their "Kamui", and becomes very successful in leading them, while Kamui himself still flounders in his new role. This leaves the Angels free to destroy the many kekkai or the spiritual barriers protecting the foundations of Tokyo, and if they are successful, they can destroy Tokyo itself, the kekkai of Japan. And Japan is the kekkai of the world. Once Japan disappears, so will the whole world.
While Fuuma takes on his new role like a fish to the water, destroying kekkai left and right, Kamui is almost always injured in every fight he gets into, until his former disposition of fighting to win. He lets his emotions for Fuuma get in the way, and thus seals his defeat in every meeting. He's managed to form very strong bonds with his own Dragons, such as Nekoi Yuzuhira, who becomes his younger sister of sorts, and Sorata who acts as his fussy older brother. He is closest to Sumeragi Subaru, who is almost like an older version of himself, and is very much like an older sister in the way that they interact and care for each other (in an
interview, CLAMP describes their relationship as "sisterly", so, yeah >>;;).
What's a war without casualties? Aside from the numerous deaths of civilians caused by the "earthquakes" of destroyed kekkai, both factions have lost some members. Two people in Fuuma's side die in battle, and, because of certain strange occurrences, are eventually replaced by two of Kamui's people- Subaru and Arashi. Subaru had left them without a word prior to joining the other side, leaving Kamui devastated, and Arashi simply disappears, making everyone worried for her.
Eventually, almost all the kekkai in Tokyo are destroyed, and when the two groups gather at the base of Tokyo Tower, the Final Battle between Kamui and "Kamui" begins. Kamui, not learning from his previous meetings with his counterpart, allows his feelings for Fuuma to get in the way, leaving him lying on his back, with "Kamui" towering over him with his sword.
ABILITIES:
Note: All of Kamui's abilities are actually in-born, most especially his "Kamui" powers, since, well... he is the true Kamui. So none of these are actually learned through outside help.
- "Kamui" abilities: The powers given to each one bearing the name "Kamui", which is mainly the manipulation of his surroundings with his mind- or in lay man's terms, telekinesis of sorts (all the Dragons have these abilities, but lesser, and tied to a specific field). It's very powerful, and almost limitless, once he puts his mind to it. He has the potential to use the classic Ten no Ryuu ability to create his own kekkai. He has yet to create one though.
- Increased muscle power: He can run fast, leap tall buildings in a single bound! very high, and even deliver a good kick or punch.
(Addendum to the above power: He can easily kill someone with a classic X/1999 move- by stabbing a hand through the victim's chest. It can only be employed when he manages to tire the opponent out to his level or lower. He just hardly has the heart to do so.)
- Increased healing ability: Injuries heal very quickly for Kamui, and this ability has been honed over time thanks to his repeated torture at Fuuma's hands.
- Sword Mastery: He may have not held a sword in his whole life, but it comes naturally for him, especially when wielding his Shinken, the Holy Sword "birthed" from his aunt. He's proven efficient in it for the short time he's seen using it in the Final Battle.
