Song of Myself
I celebrate myself and sing myself
I have blonde hair and blues
Freckles cover my nose
15 11/12 years ago I can into this world
Dancing and playing my viola are what I like best
Meatballs and pickled herring come from my Swedish heritage.
A teacher and engineer, my parents passed on much knowledge to me
Two older sisters, a brother, two nieces, a sister-in-law, and an almost brother-in-law;
A family I love and who loves me
As the big truck turned onto a dark dirt road,
I wondered if we were almost there.
A campfire brightly burning marked the place
where we would be staying.
Terrified by the figure hurtling towards me;
Oh no, it’s only Jake.
Walking to the outhouse;
Suddenly nose to nose with a bovine.
A restless night,
Every sound disturbing my sleep.
Cows mooing, coyotes yowling, and rats scurrying;
Strange sounds for a city girl.
Not long after sunrise,
The vibrations from chainsaws shook the ground.
Chop, collect, stack, the wood needed to be hauled.
A walk through the forest concluded the trip.
Now I will do nothing but listen.
Music coming from my speakers;
Christian rock and country, I sing along.
Music coming from the stereo;
Leaping, spinning, dancing enthusiastically.
Music coming from the instruments;
Crescendo, ritard, playing in harmony.
Voices shouting down the hall.
Girls gossiping during class.
A kind greeting from my friends.
The telephone rings,
A voice on the other end.
The day is over,
The night is quiet.
My friends at church are really spectacular.
Close friendships-
Caring, sharing, trusting, and praying for one another.
They know who I am and love me still.
Gratefully, I love them too.
Laughing, playing, traveling, eating;
We share good times.
I feel like a puppy bouncing joyfully.
A cheerful yipping fills the air.
I run and play worry free.
My body gets tired,
And I rest long and hard.
Always growing and changing
Energy flowing through every action
Excited to see new things
Wanting to experience more
Needing love and care
Cuddling when my energy is gone
You’ll find me busy,
Waiting for my drivers license
Hoping for the future
Anticipating graduation
Gathering new knowledge everyday
Wondering what life will bring me.
