Another semester another new group of students. My new students seem to think that I am an overeducated idiot, so typical start of the semester. It amazes me that they just take for granted that I know what I am doing. I wonder what happens to them in their high school classes to make them so fearful of talking anf trying things and having opinions. While simultaneously thinking that getting an A on a high school paper means they already know all about writing. (sigh)
Of course, the students in Composition 2 (most of whom took my Comp 1) have already warned the others that I'm much more crafty than I might appear at first. "Sure... she lets us watch vidoes in class, but just get an eye at the reading."
They're all writing papers for Monday and doing a peer review together, so that will be interesting for them, poor things.
I did a meeting with folks at the medical school (we're forming a writing group) and I was able to refer to practices at
sherlock60 and
fan_flashworks and
smallfandomfest as possibly helpful for doctors... leaving aside the fanfiction and the porn. I can't say how much I admire the folks who run these and keep all the messages positive and encourage good writing practice.
I am so very grateful for the
sherlock60 crew. A positive Sunday morning after a week in darkest Long Island. There must be something in the water around here to make everyone so goshdarn unpleasant all the time. My new strategery for local jaunts is to go to the few pleasant towns or, if I take a walk near home, just smile a lot and avoid the supermarkets and the Starbucks.
